Sara M. “Micki” Cantwell was born in Gadsby, Alberta Canada on January 25, 1925 and in  Shawnee, Johnson County,  Kansas passed away Thursday, November 25, 2010 at the Kansas City Hospice House. Sara was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Parish and a volunteer with Catholic Charities, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Shawnee Community Services and Old Shawnee Days. She is survived by sons Skip and Scott, five grandchildren, Travis, Aubrey, Jim, Jacob, and Madelyn and a brother and sister. The family expresses their appreciation to the staff and volunteers at KC Hospice House.

OCCUPATION: Upon graduating he worked for Monsanto Chemical Company for 12 years as a research chemist. His work produced 15 US Patents and 6 scientific publications. From there he moved into higher education where he served for 15 years as an administrator at Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri, Midwestern University of Wichita Falls, Texas and the College of the Ozarks, Clarksville, Arkansas. He was then called to the presidency of The Presbyterian Lay Committee, Springfield, Pennsylvania for 14 years. Over the course of these years, he served on many boards and committees in his professions, communities, and churches. He was very active in the Presbyterian Churches where he lived, serving as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, Deacon, choir member & tenor soloist. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Sterling College from 1978 – 1993 and was Chairman of the Board seven of those years. Two years later he was called to serve as Interim President and within two years retired to Trustee Emeritus status. Following his retirement, he participated in volunteer work in Sterling, Rice County and at Sterling College.
EDUCATION: He graduated High School at Sparta, IL. in 1945. He then graduated Sterling College in 1949 with a degree in Chemistry. He earned his doctorate in pharmaceutical and organic chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1953.
MARRIAGE: On June 8, 1948, he married Margaret Eloise Treaster in the Hopewell United Presbyterian Church near Beloit, Kansas
SPOUSE DEATH DATE: Eloise preceded him in death February 15, 2010
SURVIVORS: 3 sons, Barry & wife Pam Campbell, Sterling, KS; Brian & wife Valerie Campbell, Dallas TX; Daniel and wife Kathi Campbell Richmond, VA; Daughter, Lynn & Bob Royer, of Sterling, KS. Grandchildren – Melinda & Jason Thomas of Sterling, Jason and Michelle Royer of Castle Rock, CO., Ian and Connor Campbell of Dallas, Ben, Emma and Abbie Campbell of Richmond, VA.; Six great-grandsons – Cale, Bryson & Easton Thomas & Jayden, Blake and Keeghan Royer.

Mrs. Belle Byrne, nee Buckles, was born at Primrose, Iowa, July 7, 1875. She came to Kansas with her parents when but three years of age and settled near Sterling.  In February 8, 1902, she was married to C.M. Byrne and three children were born to this union. For sixteen years she has lived in Hutchinson and departed this life on the morning of June 9, 1928, aged 52 years, 11 months and 2 days.

At the age of twenty she was converted and joined the Methodist church, but late in 1912 joined the Evangelical church. Services were conducted at this church Sunday afternoon by Rev. Hobbs and at Sterling Cemetery, amid a profusion of beautiful flowers, the body was tenderly consigned to its last resting place, by loving friends.

Mrs. Byrne is survived by her husband, one son, Howard C. Byrne of the home, two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd McIntyre, and Mrs. Clifford Rayl; two brothers, Harry Buckles, of Marysville; Howard Buckles of Hutchinson; two half sisters, Mrs. Will Pierce, of Saxman; and Mrs. Maude Rye, of Greeley, Colo., and a host of other relatives and friends.
