PASSED OVER THE RIVER
Jasper O’Neil, well known in Sterling for a number of years, being prominent in mercantile and church society, died on Monday afternoon, February 22, at five o’clock. Mr. O’Neil had conducted a grocery store in Sterling for a number of years and was upright in all his business dealings. He was well liked by all, and the large concourse of people, who attended his funeral attested to the esteem in which he was held.
Mr. O’Neil has been troubled with heart disease for a number of years and was frequently confined to his bed. For the last three months he grew steadily worse, and during that time rarely left his room. On Monday the end came, and his soul took its flight.
Jasper O’Neil was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, on August 17th, 1827. United with the Presbyterian church at the age of eighteen, and remained a faithful member until his death. He lived a most consistent Christian life, being always remarkable for his piety and devotion. He moved to Iowa in 1844, where he was married in 1848. By this union, he was the father of six children, two of whom preceded him at the Master’s call. On August 19th, 1861, he enrolled in Company B, 50th regiment, Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, and served his county four years. He came to Kansas in 1883. He was married to Mrs. Fisher in 1886, with whom he lived happily, and who remains to mourn the loss of a faithful and devoted husband.
Margaret Ann(Leasure) was married to William Fisher, Jr. , Jan. 1, 1845 in West Moreland County, PA.
She married Jasper O’Neil Sept. 10, 1848 in Lee County, IA. Together they had six children, 4 of whom lived. Margaret Ann died November 2, 1906 in Van Buren Co., Iowa and was buried in Hood River, Hood River County, Oregon, USA.

O’Neil, Sarah Columbia (Tharp) Fisher wife of Jasper and Alexander
Burial Date: 1892, 12/25 Age: 47 Lot: 172 I

Mrs. Sarah Columbia O’Neil died last Sunday morning, December 26th, at 10 o’clock. She had been afflicted with chronic bronchitis for a number of years, and for the last three weeks of her life had been confined to her room. Mrs. O’Neil was born in Virginia, and at the time of her death was aged 47 years, 3 months, and 23 days. She had been a resident of Sterling for about seventeen years, having come here in the winter of 1877. She was married to Jasper O’Neil in 1885 and his death occurred on the 22nd of February, 1892, just ten months before his wife. Mrs. O’Neil’s mother, Mrs. Tharp, lives in Raymond, and she also leaves a brother, J.I. Tharp, who has assisted her in conducting the grocery business here since the death of her husband.
The deceased had been a member of the Presbyterian church for a number of years, and the funeral services were held there Tuesday afternoon. She was laid to rest in Cottonwood cemetery beside the body of her husband, to “sleep the sleep that knows not breaking morn of toil or night of waking.” She was a woman who was very generous and kindhearted and lived an upright Christian life.
