Sherrill Davenport Curry April 29, 2024

Santa Maria – Sherrill Curry passed away peacefully in her home in Santa Maria, California on April 29,2024 at age 91.

Sherrill was born in Des Moines Iowa and spent her childhood in Iowa and upstate New York. She met Paul Curry while her Stepfather and Paul were stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. She and Paul were married in 1956 and together for 44 years. Many of those years were spent in exotic, and not-so-exotic, locales due to Paul’s military service.

Sherrill held a degree in Psychology from Cal State Northridge and a master’s in Marriage and Family Counseling from Cal State Los Angeles. She maintained a lifelong love of learning. She stayed interested, informed, and loved to thoughtfully discuss current events.

Sherrill and Paul relocated to Santa Maria in 1984 from the Los Angeles area and quickly settled into the community. They were active members of the First United Methodist Church where Sherrill loved singing in the choir. She was the house chair of the Minerva Club for many years and a proud member of AAUW, and the Friendship Club.

Sherrill loved the arts, attending performances at Cal Poly, the Clark Center, PCPA and the Santa Maria Philharmonic. She rarely missed a performance of the Central Coast Chordsmen or the Coastal Voices. Sherrill’s collection of books is a testament to her love of reading, which she passed on to her children. She remained spunky and adventurous her whole life. She loved the great outdoors and cherished the rustic beauty of Huntington Lake. She zip-lined to celebrate her 80th birthday and went sky diving for her 85th birthday.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Young, Barbara Curry, and Marilyn Curry. Her grandchildren, Patrick Young, Lela Heza and August Heza. And her great granddaughter Autumn Young. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Curry in 2001 and Grandson Garret Young in 2023.

A memorial is scheduled for May 31st at the Minerva Club at 10:30 AM. The Minerva Club is located at 127 W. Boone Street, Santa Maria.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Heifer International, Minerva Club, Santa Maria Humane Society or Friends of the Santa Maria Public Library.

Linder, Ila Marie(Proffitt)

Linder, Ila Marie(Proffitt)       w/ Rex

August 20, 1937 ~ February 17, 2024 (age 86)

Ila Linder Obituary

Ila Marie (Proffitt) Linder, 86, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away February 17, 2024, in Lyons, Kansas. A proud product of the prairie, Ila Marie Proffitt was born on August 20, 1937 in Sterling, Kansas. The only daughter of J.M. & Lutie (Towse) Proffitt, Ila joined big brothers Wayne and Billy. Eventually baby brother, Gary, joined the scene. Endless memories were soon made by the Proffitt four, first, out in the sandhills by Alden, then south of Sterling in pastures near the Arkansas River. Ila was proud to be the daughter and sister of farmers and she herself was active in 4H and completing before and after school farm chores. Ila graduated form Sterling High School in 1955, where she participated in band, FHA, 4H & Y-Teens. After high school, Ila attended Grace School of Nursing in Hutchinson, Kansas and graduated as a proud Registered Nurse. It was her nursing school classmate, Irene, who would introduce her to a young Army man, Rex Linder. Rex and Ila were married at Sterling United Methodist Church on September 29, 1958. The army would take Rex & Ila and their four children, Cathy, Roger, Mike, and Nancy to Kansas, Germany, Georgia and Washington, moving a total of 19 times. With four kids in tow, there was no doubt where Ila would go during Rex’s two tours in Vietnam: home to Sterling. After Rex’s retirement from the U.S. Army, the family settled in Clay Center, Kansas. After the kids were done with high school, Ila began working at the Clay County Health Department until she retired as the Director In 1997. With the retirement chapter ahead of them, Ila and Rex knew where they should go: home to Sterling. Rex and Ila quickly settled in just south of town and enjoyed time gardening, spoiling their grandchildren, and spending time in their community. Never one to be fully still, Ila spent hours with her aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and of course- her brothers. Additionally, she worked a few hours a week at the Rice County Health Department in Lyons. After Rex’s passing in 2012, Ila moved into town and enjoyed traveling, lunching with friends, but most importantly, her family. She was proud to have raised a respiratory therapist, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, a pharmacist, and a teacher. She was incredibly proud of their grandchildren and their accomplishments in their personal and professional lives. She was especially keen on the addition of Megs, Hanna, Jaime, Eric, and Olivia. But, in all honesty, no one else could compare with Arya, Ryker, & Tommy- the great grands. Ila Proffitt Linder was meticulous. She was marvelous. She was our matriarch. She will always be missed. Ila was proceeded in death by her husband Rex, her brothers- Wayne (Ruth), Billy (Joann), and Gary (Joanna) Proffitt, her parents, J.M. & Lutie Proffitt, and her Linder brothers and sisters-in -law. She is survived by her four children, Cathy Lutz, Roger (Connie) Linder, Mike, and Nancy (Tom) Rundel, Her ten grandchildren, Maj. Jerad (Jaime) Linder, Dustin (Maeghan) Linder, Case Rundel, Emily Lutz, Will Lutz (Olivia Marks), Colton (Hanna) Rundel, Sam Linder, Elly Lutz (Eric Gordon), John Linder and Morgan Blackim. And three great grandchildren, Arya and Ryker Linder and Tommy Rundel. Other surviving family include brother-in-law, Gene Stout, sisters-in-law Donna and Paula Proffitt, and a host of Proffitt and Linder nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Pastor Amy Foster officiating. Burial will follow at the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, February 23, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Age: 78

Barbara Ellen Brown, 78, of Hutchinson, Kansas, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 23, 2023.
Barbara was born November 20, 1945 to Bill and Mary Dipert (both deceased). She was raised by Mary and Delbert Potts, also deceased, with brothers, Cecil (Buddy) and Earl; sisters, Paulette Smith (deceased), Nancy Savage, Nash OK, and Delberta Rodriguez, Kinsley, KS.
In March of 1969, Barbara married Donald Gene Brown (deceased) in Dodge City KS.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Pamela Sue Pease, of Hutchinson, KS, and Debra Kay Larsen, of Allingaabro, Denmark; granddaughters, DeLora Buck, and Rayna Buck, both of Wichita, KS; and great grandson Dalton Spence.
Barbara lived at Wesley Towers since the fall of 2015. She really blossomed and came into her own whilst there. Her ornery nature made her a staff favorite and won her a place in all their hearts, and they hers. Activities were very important to her. If you visited at Bingo time, you had to wait until the game was over, or pull up a chair and join in. No matter her own limitations, she was always willing and eager to help in any way she could. She was truly a remarkable person.
Barbara was on Hospice Care the past few months and so enjoyed the Hospice staff when they visited. They were truly awesome to the very end.
A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Wesley Towers Chapel, 3709 Asbury Place, Hutchinson, KS with Pastor Barry Rodriquez officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time at Wesley Towers. Burial will take place at Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, KS.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Reno County and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS 67502.
