 The Kinsley Mercury, 21 Aug 1913, Thu, Page 4Milian Owen Bacheller was born in McDonough, Chenango Co., New York, on March 16, 1865. When thirteen years of age he came with his parents to central Kansas and continued in this state the rest of his life. He early displayed intellectual tendencies and virtually spent his life either studying or teaching. In 1892, he was married at Alden, Kansas, to Miss Deema Griffee, who later presented him with one son, Lindley. He died at Topeka, Kansas, August 15, 1913, at the age of 48 years, 4 months, 29 days. Besides his wife and son his aged parents, residents of Kansas City, and two sisters and two brothers survive him.Mr. Bacheller was a man whose character qualities are best appreciated in the circle of intimate friends. He was a high-minded, patriotic citizen whose influence was always on the right side. He was a man of thorough education and fine intellectual attainments and for two years was principal of the north side school, which position he was forced to resign on account of failing eyesight. Later he served the city in the capacity of treasurer with the utmost fidelity. He was singularly faithful, even to the degree of using his utmost efforts to fulfill the duties of a church officer; he was loyal to his friends to his church and to his pastor, ever ready with counsel and service to the best of his ability; he was a man who had the courage of his convictions, and the patience and steadfastness to cling to them in the vicissitudes of life, most of which he spent serving.In a time of adversity, a cheerful hope marked his conversation and conduct. In early boyhood, he united with the Congregational church and continued in its faith and fellowship until his death. The funeral was conducted by his pastor, Rev. H.E. Heyse, at Alden, Kansas, the old family home, on Sunday afternoon, August 17 and was attended by a large gathering of people, of whom very many had been his pupils. Pliny and Sarah had three children: Olive Axtell, Celestia Axtell, Ophelia Axtell.Pliny married secondly on 25 March 1867, to Martha A. Hitchcock. Obituary Lenore H. Axtell
Lenore H. Axtell, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor, at the age of 84.
She was born Dec. 13, 1916, at Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Roy Lee Hurr and Frances wheeler. She graduated from Sterling College in 1959 and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado, with a master’s in education. A resident of Sterling since 1932, she taught at Nickerson Grad School for 21 years retiring in 1980.
She was a member of Sterling United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, Mutual Benefit, Modern Priscilla and Willing Workers Sunday school class, and was a 60-year member of the Girls Club.
On Oct. 14 1938, she married Donnell Axtell at Sterling.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, both of Sterling; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial service was at 10 a.m. Monday at Sterling United Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Glen Holman officiating. Private inurnment of cremains will be at a later date in Sterling Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Sterling College or Sterling United Presbyterian Church, both in care of Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Elliott Mortuary & CrematoryDonnell Axtell( September 07, 1917 – October 23, 2005 ) STERLING – Donnell Axtell, 88, died Oct. 23, 2005, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. He was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Sterling, the son of Burton F. and Ava Bancroft Axtell. He graduated in 1935, from Sterling High School. A longtime Sterling resident, he was a retired dairy farmer. He belonged to Sterling United Presbyterian Church, Sterling Lions Club, serving as past president, and past district governor of the Kansas Lions District 17NE. On Oct. 14, 1938, he married Lenore Hurr in Sterling. She died Nov. 22, 2001. Survivors include two sons, Harvey and Harold, both of Sterling; a stepbrother, Ed Meyers, Sylvia; two stepsisters, Virginia Beard, Minneola, and Evelyn Hildebrand, Fowler; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three half-brothers; and a half-sister. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sterling United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. William C. McConnelee presiding. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Sterling City Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Sterling United Presbyterian Church or the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation, both in care of the funeral home. |
