Obituary Lenore H. Axtell

Lenore H. Axtell, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor, at the age of 84.

She was born Dec. 13, 1916, at Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Roy Lee Hurr and Frances wheeler. She graduated from Sterling College in 1959 and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado, with a master’s in education. A resident of Sterling since 1932, she taught at Nickerson Grad School for 21 years retiring in 1980.

She was a member of Sterling United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, Mutual Benefit, Modern Priscilla and Willing Workers Sunday school class, and was a 60-year member of the Girls Club.

On Oct. 14 1938, she married Donnell Axtell at Sterling.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, both of Sterling; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial service was at 10 a.m. Monday at Sterling United Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Glen Holman officiating. Private inurnment of cremains will be at a later date in Sterling Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Sterling College or Sterling United Presbyterian Church, both in care of Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

STERLING – Donnell Axtell, 88, died Oct. 23, 2005, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor.

He was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Sterling, the son of Burton F. and Ava Bancroft Axtell. He graduated in 1935, from Sterling High School. A longtime Sterling resident, he was a retired dairy farmer.

He belonged to Sterling United Presbyterian Church, Sterling Lions Club, serving as past president, and past district governor of the Kansas Lions District 17NE.

On Oct. 14, 1938, he married Lenore Hurr in Sterling. She died Nov. 22, 2001.

Survivors include two sons, Harvey and Harold, both of Sterling; a stepbrother, Ed Meyers, Sylvia; two stepsisters, Virginia Beard, Minneola, and Evelyn Hildebrand, Fowler; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three half-brothers; and a half-sister.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sterling United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. William C. McConnelee presiding. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Sterling City Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Sterling United Presbyterian Church or the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.

She was born on April 28, 1921, in Wilson County, near Coffeeville,  Kansas, the daughter of Charles William and Hazel June (Partington) Gable. She had been a resident of Ellsworth for 12 years, formerly of Larned.  She was a homemaker and attended the United Methodist Church, Ellsworth, Kansas.

On July 17, 1939, she married William Fred Austin at McPherson., KS.  He died Dec. 23, 1986.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Jerry Armstrong, Ellsworth; two brothers, Harold Gable, Chase, and Verle Gable, Exeter, MO; five sisters, Joyce White, Gardner; Fain Boley, Republic, MO; Shirlie Bower, Loveland, CO; Mae Riedel, Bellevue, WA; and Donna Graves, Shell Knob, MO; three grandchildren, J.D. Armstrong II, and Audrey Armstrong, Ellsworth, and Jennifer Gaston, Concord, NC. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dwight Gable and Dean Gable.

Services were held at 10″30 a.m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with Dr. John Snook officiating. Burial was in the Sterling Community Cemetery. Memorials to the Ellsworth Needy Family Fund or the Ellsworth United Methodist Youth, in care of the mortuary.
