Obituary – Sterling Bulletin, 11/01/1923

W. H. Allen Passed Away Sunday Morning Following Stroke Which He Suffered On Wednesday

W. H. Allen, whose very serious illness was mentioned in last week’s Bulletin never regained consciousness after suffering a stroke of paralysis, last Wednesday afternoon, although he lived until Sunday morning about 7 o’clock.

Mr. Allen had not been well for about six years, and the winter months seemed to be especially hard on him.  However, he failed as gradually that it was hardly noticeable to people who saw him frequently. He had been down on the street a few times of late with his wife, on whom he leaned for support. In fact, he was on the street for a little while the day he was afflicted with paralysis.

He seemed as well as usual and had asked for some chocolates. His wife left him long enough to go down to Peter’s confectionary and when she returned she found him in an unconscious condition. He was never able to speak after she found him, although Mrs. Allen thinks at times he recognized her.

William Hawkins Allen was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, June 26, 1838, and lived in that community until moving to Sterling about forty-four years ago. He was united in marriage in Bellefontaine on June 7, 1866, to Miss Fannie J. Wilkins, and the couple lived to celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary together.

When they first came to Kansas they lived on a farm about 14 miles NE of Sterling, but for about 40 years they have been residents of this city, and Mr. Allen was known to practically every one. There were no children in the home, and Mr. Allen is the last one of his own family, only one nephew of the Allen family being left.

Mr. Allen was a Civil war veteran. He was the first man to enlist in Bellefountaine, Ohio, and he enrolled for the three months call for Civil War service. In April 1861, and served four months. In June 1862, he re-enlisted and was mustered in at Camp Chase, August 19, 1862, and was mustered out in June 1865.

The Urbana, Ohio, News gives some of the battles of Capt. Allen’s regiment, as follows: Dutton’s Hill, Ky. March 30, 1863;  Monticelo, June 9; pursuing Morgan and his raiders up through Ohio and Indiana and into Tennessee. In October the regiment lost 163 killed, wounded and prisoners. Onllens, Kennesaw Mountain, Altlanta, Jamesboro, Franklin, Tenn., and in a two-days fight at Nashville. November 15, south of Knoxville, they lost 101 more of their men–300 men in 30 days. On November 17 they were besieged in Knoxville in an engagement, lasting seventeen days. In the spring of 1864, he moved on to Georgia, into Buzzard Roost, Ga., and all through that memorable campaign. His regiment was engaged in the battles at Rosacca-Dollens, Kennesaw Mountain, Altlanta, Jamesboro, Franklin, Tenn., and in a two-days fight at Nashville.

Mrs. Ella Houx, of Long Beach, Cal., a sister of Mrs. Allen’s came yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral and be with her bereaved sister in her sorrow. Mrs. Houx was accompanied by her son Harry.

Death is always an unwelcome visitor and leaves aching hearts whenever it comes, but we feel an especial sympathy for the bereaved wife, who is left alone to mourn this death of her life partner, over whom she has watched carefully for the past few years.

Funeral services were held this afternoon, November 1, at 4:30, in the I.O.O.F. hall, conducted by Rev. W. I. Hinshaw.”
