Bruce Amend
Bruce Amend, a lifetime Sterling resident, died Tuesday, April 23, 1991, at the District Hospital in Lyons after a sudden illness.
He was born Oct. 17, 1900, at Sterling the son of Charles E. and Lizzie McClure Amend. He was a retired sheet-metal worker for Sterling Appliance, retiring in 1965.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Silver Threads and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, all at Sterling.
He married Laura Proffitt at Lyons on June 3, 1923.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; five sons, Bob, Don, and Larry, all of Sterling; Bill, El Dorado; and Rex, Holyrood; a daughter, Connie Green, Kansas City, MO; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at Porter and Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with the Rev. F. A. O’Kelley officiating. Burial was in the Sterling Community Cemetery.

Michael Altman was born in Germany September 30, 1826, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Koch, in Rockville Township, Rice County, Kansas, November 6, 1906; aged 80 years, 1 month and 6 days. His wife, Anna Anastasia(Speckner) Altman preceded him in death by ten years. He leaves to mourn the loss of a father- six daughters, three in Germany and three in America. At the age of 13 Mr. Altman was confirmed a member of the Evangelical church which has been his church home until removed by death.
Rev. M. F. Scontan conducted the funeral from the Congregational church in Little River at 11 o’clock a.m., Thursday, November 8, and the remains were interred in Bean Cemetery.
