Bennett Boes was born in December 1837 in Indiana. In 1863 he married Miss Ann Dobson. To this union was born one child, Samuel Boes of Sterling. In 1868, having suffered the loss of his companion, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Asher.
When Mary Asher was born in 1850 her father, James, was 26 and her mother, Elizabeth, was 24. She married Bennett Boes on October 8, 1868 and had five children with him by the time she was 28. She died as a young mother on January 29, 1879, in Douglas County, Illinois, and was buried there. Their children were five boys-John and James, Sterling; Anthony of Waldron, Vaughn of Larned, and William of Sterling.
He then married Susanna (Ule) Van Horn and they had four children together – Orie, Sterling, Mrs. Ruth Walburn, Huntsville, Mrs. Bessie Bressler, Liberal and Charles, Garden City.
During the Civil strife, Mr. Boes heeded the call of his country and enlisted in Co. B 148 Indiana infantry. He came to Sterling, Kan., in 1885, where he resided until last March (1908) when he removed to Larned. Mr. Boes had no connection with any organized church but his loved ones have hope in his death. He leaves three brothers and two sisters, a large family and a host of friends to mourn his departure but they hope to meet him in a land that is fairer than this , Extracted from Obituary by C. V. Priddle (Sterling Bulletin Jan. 15, 1909)
