Callie Smith was born in February 3, 1875 in Rice County, Kansas. She was the first girl baby born in the townsite and was presented the lot where now stands the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vogel on north 7th Street.(Lyons Republican, 07 Oct. 1913,) She married William Thomas Brown in May 18, 1898. They had one child Willahemetta, Jan. 15, 1902. When the child was 5 months old, she met with an accident which made her an invalid for life. The constant worry, attention and anxiety for her baby has been the principal cause of death. She died on September 30, 1913, at the age of 38.
Callie’s parents were Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Smith. Mr. Smith was president of the First National Bank.

Alice’s memorial stone is an honorary plate presented by MIC (Mutual Improvement Club) of Sterling, KS in appreciation for her teaching of Art at Sterling College and the china painting classes, she held in her home studio at 228 N. 7th Street, teaching the women of the community. Sets and pieces of china painted and decorated by these women can be found in many homes in Sterling.
Alice was held in high esteem and loved by many. At one time some of her nieces and nephews lived in her home with her as they pursued their education.

Thora L. Brothers, 87, died July 23, 2001, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor, Sterling.
She was born March 7, 1914, at Saxman, the Daughter of Edward and Anna Hauschild Renollet. A lifetime resident of Rice County, sh was a retired bookkeeper for D.J. Fair Lumber Company, Sterling.
She belonged to Sterling United Presbyterian Church, Sterling.
On Dec. 20, 1936, she married Sam N. Brothers at Sterling. He died Aug. 5, 1989.
Survivors include a daughter Sharon Owen, Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sterling United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Glen Holman presiding. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling. Memorials may be sent to the church, in care of the funeral home.
