Obituary  Bulletin and Gazette, Friday, April 19, 1895

After several years of poor health and a recent severe illness from which he seemed to be recovering, James Brown died suddenly on Friday, April 12.  His age was 51 years, 11 months and 18 days. Mr.  Brown was born in Patterson, N. J. and from there went to Clarinda, Iowa. Soon after, when the war broke our, he enlisted at a the age of 18 years, in the 1st Nebraska cavalry, and afterwards re-enlisted, in the war. He saw a great deal of service, was in the battle of Shiloh, and at the close of the rebellion fought Indians for several years. He was mustered out July 1, 1866.

Mr. Brown was married twice, there being five surviving children by the first wife. Six years ago he was married to Jennie Glaze, who survives him. Since his 21st year he has been a member of the United Presbyterian church, and has always been an active Christian worker. He was an elder for sixteen years in one church to which he belonged, and for several years past he has been the secretary of the Sterling Y.M.C.A. The funeral services were held at the home, on Eighth street, conducted by Ref. C. H. Strong.

“Killed in the Trench.”

A telegram from Joseph Owen this morning to his wife, announced the death of Mr. C. Brown, who was working for Mr. Owen at Florence laying water mains. Deceased live in the Ira Dodds house, and was about fifty years of age. The remains arrived here on the ten o’clock train.

P.S. – A special dispatch to the Emporia REPUBLICAN states that the deceased was killed at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, by the caving in of a ditch at the water works.

—C. Brown, the man who was killed at Florence, was buried this morning at ten o’clock, the funeral sermon being preached at the family residence on West Adams Street, by Rev. S. Brink, of the M.E. church. Deceased was an old soldier, but Meade Post took no part in the ceremonies.

Cortland Brown was born on September 29, 1837, his father, Nathan, was 34 and his mother, Lydia, was 32. He has five children with Mary Elizabeth Swagger and four children with Elizabeth Brown. He died on May 17, 1887, in Sterling, Kansas, at the age of 49.

Mary Elizabeth Swagger was born on September 14, 1842, in Mercer, Pennsylvania, the child of John and Sarah. She had three sons and two daughters with Cortland Brown between 1867 and 1876. She died on May 12, 1917, in Sterling, Kansas, at the age of 74.

Elizabeth Brown was born about 1841, in Ohio. She had three sons and one daughter with Cortland Brown between 1867 and 1876.
