Robert Maurice Reed, 98, died June 27, 2016 at District Hospital Rice County. He was born at home in Topeka, Kansas on July 28, 1917 to Theo Hargrave Reed and Alice Mary (Dill) Reed. Maurice graduated from Topeka High School in 1935 and Sterling College, Sterling, KS in 1939. He married Margaret Nichol in Sterling, KS June 14, 1940. She died April 25, 2009. They lived in Topeka until World War II, when Maurice joined the Merchant Marines and served as Chief Radio Officer on 3 ships in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters. He and Margaret returned to Sterling after the war where Maurice started a dry cleaning business, which he ran for 13 years. Following that time, he taught in the Sterling public schools as a Junior High science and math teacher during which time he earned a Master’s Degree from Emporia State University in 1962. He served as principal for Sterling High School for 3 years before returning to Topeka to teach in the Washburn Rural School District until his retirement in 1982. He and Margaret returned to Sterling in 1992. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, a daughter Marilyn and a son Robert Maurice, Jr., a grandson John David Reed, a great-granddaughter Reed Madelyn Dillard and sister Marian Martin. He is survived by a son Don (wife Linda) of Sterling, daughter-in-law Ginger of Sterling, six grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Maurice was a lifetime member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America having held membership in the Topeka and Sterling congregations and served as Elder in both congregations. He served 8 years on the Sterling Public School Board. He also served on the Board of Sterling College (1951–1956). He was a long-time member of Rotary International. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016, at the Sterling Reformed Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Jerry Milroy officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Navy and the Sterling American Legion. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. Friday with family present from 5:00 – 7:00 at Birzer Funeral Home in Sterling. Memorials may be sent to Sterling Reformed Presbyterian Church or Sterling College for the Reed Family Endowed Scholarship.

Beloved husband and father, Hadley Fergus Hicks, 83, longtime resident of Sterling KS, went home to be with his Savior on June 21, 2016. Hadley was born in Bisbee, Arizona, on April 1, 1933, to Hadley Hugh Hicks and Margaret Fergus Hicks. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Mike Hicks of Inman, KS. Hadley graduated from Bisbee High School in 1952, where he was a star athlete. He was on the All American High School Football and Track team 1951-1952 and the school retired his #20 football jersey when he graduated. He was the Governor of Arizona Boys State in 1951. He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Arizona State University where he also played baseball. In 1958, he played on a rookie team for the Chicago Cubs in Pulaski, Virginia. He later earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Montana and served on the board of the Arizona Athletic Hall of Fame. He was an outstanding teacher and a coach for his entire career, which included positions in Carmel CA, Prescott AZ, Flagstaff AZ, Sioux Falls SD, and Sterling College. He retired in 2013 from the Sterling Public Schools. He authored two books: The B Shines Brighter: The Bisbee High School Legacy, about his childhood in Bisbee and So You Wanna be a Legend: So Did I, about teaching, coaching and life. He was a member of Faith Bible Church in Lyons KS. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Nancy Hicks of Sterling KS; sister, Quila Rider of Showlow AZ; and brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Linda Hicks of Bisbee AZ; daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Dennis McDonald of Camp Verde AZ; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Lori Hicks of Camp Verde AZ; daughter-in-law, Jean Hicks of Camp Verde AZ; daughter and son-in-law, Kristin and Scott Randolph of Sterling KS; and son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Mieka Stecker of Spirit Lake IA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael and Taylor Hicks of Camp Verde AZ; Jason McDonald and and wife Camille of Paris, France; Megan McDonald of Camp Verde AZ; Joanna Street and husband Kiefer of Pineville NC; Luke Hicks and wife Breanna of Camp Verde AZ; Elizabeth Hicks of Oklahoma City OK; Harrison, Addisyn, Jolie, and Quentin Randolph of Sterling KS; and Annika, Adrie, Dylan, Ethan, Bennett, and Evan Stecker of Spirit Lake IA; and great grandchildren, Nolan, Rylan, and Rae Lynn Hicks of Camp Verde AZ; and Calvin Street of Pineville NC. There will be a private graveside ceremony for the family with military honors at the Sterling Community Cemetery. A memorial service, open to friends and family, will be at Faith Bible Church in Lyons KS on July 2, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Phil Green officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established that will be used to honor Hadley’s desire to support various ministries. Memorials can be sent in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.

Richard C. (Dick) Wyatt, Wichita, Kansas, died June 16, 2016, in Wichita. Dick was born March 4, 1924 in Sterling, Kansas, the son of Robert E. Wyatt and Nina M. Cuthbertson Wyatt. He had 2 brothers, Robert E. Wyatt and William M. Wyatt. He was a graduate of Sterling High School and attended Sterling College and the University of Kansas. He served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII with the Asiatic/Pacific Theater. He was recalled to the Navy Reserve Unit to serve in the Korean War. On April 5, 1947 he married Anna Lou (Annie) McAllaster. They had 2 sons, Ray E. Wyatt, Abilene, KS., and Rex A. Wyatt, now deceased.

Dick was President of Peoples Savings and Loan Association, Sterling, Kansas, until 1983. At that time, Peoples Savings merged with First Federal Savings and Loan Association, now Landmark National Bank, and Dick and Annie moved to Dodge City, Kansas, where Dick served as Senior Vice President and on the Board of Directors until his retirement.

Dick was involved in many activities. He was President of Midwest Savings Conference in 1962-63; served on Board of Directors of Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka which supervised the states of Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Nebraska from 1968 to 1972. He was president of the Kansas Savings and Loan League during the year 1975-1976. He served on the Board of the United Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, a Director of the Dodge City Chamber of Commerce, a Director of the Rice County Development Corporation, & clerk of the public school district in Sterling for 18 years.

Dick had been active in the Presbyterian Church in Sterling. He was treasurer of 15 years and also served as a ruling elder on the Session. He was chairman of the building committee for the new church in Sterling, dedicated in 1971. After moving to Dodge City in 1983 he served the Presbyterian Church there as an elder, church treasurer and Trustee.

Active in Rotary since joining in January, 1948, he was a Paul Harris Fellow, and served as President of the Sterling and Dodge City, Kansas, Clubs, as well as a District Governor of Rotary District 5690. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Rotary International Golfing Fellowship and one of the organizers of the United States Golfing Fellowship of Rotary. He enjoyed golf, bridge and traveling with Annie.

He is survived by Annie, of the home, Ray, and wife Joan, of Abilene, Grandsons Tate, Tanner, Jeffery and Joshua, 5 Great-Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 24, 2016, at 1:30P.M., in Sterling, Kansas, at the United Presbyterian Church, 309 N. LAWRENCE — Douglas Walter Wahl, 56, of Lawrence, Kan., died July 30, 2013, in Lawrence. Doug was born in Lincoln, Kan., on June 11, 1957, the second of three sons of Richard and Harriet Wahl. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1975, attended Kansas State University for a year, and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1980 with a degree in journalism. He later received a master’s degree in business from Baker University. Doug went to Europe in 1980 for graduate school and the grand tour, eventually deciding to live in Bologna, Italy, where he worked as an English instructor and tour manager until 1987, when he returned to the U.S. He held marketing positions with KPL Gas Service Co. and Utilicorp United in Lawrence and Kansas City, and later held executive positions with Commonwealth Edison in Chicago and with First Energy in Akron, Ohio. In 2001, Doug moved to Lawrence and purchased Lawrence Pawn and Jewelry. Doug had a creative, independent and sensitive spirit. He loved cooking, guns, good humor, and Italy, and he never lost touch with the sandy-haired boy who roamed the creeks and rolling hills, dreaming of adventures and fascinating things. Doug was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his brother, Phillip, and wife Leslie and children, Natalie and Georgia; and his brother, Donald and partner Sean O’Hogan and children, Axel, Cris and Seni. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Richard W. Wahl, 89, of Salina, Kan., died May 21, 2012, at Salina Regional Health Center. He was born in Saxman, Kan., on Jan. 26, 1923, the youngest of eight surviving children of August and Olga Wahl, German immigrants from the area on the Baltic Coast then known as East Prussia. He attended public schools in Saxman and Lyons, Kan., graduating from Lyons High School in 1940. He briefly attended the University of Kansas before enlisting in the United States Army in 1943, serving in medical units in Ireland, England, and France during World War II and in Germany immediately following the War. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to the University of Kansas, graduating in 1949 with a degree in business and in 1951 from the University of Kansas School of Law. After graduation, he moved to Lincoln, Kan., and established a solo law practice that he maintained until 1975 when he was appointed Chief Judge of the 12th Judicial District of Kansas. He retired in 1989 but continued to sit by appointment. He was later appointed a Senior Judge on the Kansas Court of Appeals and served until a few years before his death. In 1954, Richard married Harriet McGuire, originally of Decatur, Ga., and they raised three sons in Lincoln. In 1981, he and Harriet moved to Concordia, Kan., where they lived until Harriet died in 2004. He moved to Lawrence, Kan., in 2005 and to Salina in 2011. He was predeceased by his wife, parents, and siblings. He is survived by his son, Phillip and his wife, Leslie and their daughters Natalie and Georgia; and by sons Douglas and Donald; his partner, Sean O’Hogan and children Axel, Cris and Seni. Richard lived honorably, unselfishly and with humor, consistently doing the right things for the right reasons. He was among the very best of us. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 16, 2012, at the Lincoln United Methodist Church, Lincoln, Kan., with a reception to follow.
