Mary Ella Flickinger, 88, of Sterling, passed away October 19, 2019 at Mennonite Manor, South Hutchinson. She was born October 21, 1930 in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of George and Carrie Justice Fulkerson. Mary was a near lifelong Sterling resident. She graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1948, and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Sterling College in 1989. Mary was a farm wife. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sterling. On July 24, 1949, Mary was united in marriage with Robert Leo Flickinger in Sterling. He preceded her in death on May 31, 2015. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, James Flickinger; and daughter, Catherine Flickinger Caldwell. Mary is survived by her three children, Janice Louise Duran and husband David of Elephant Butte, NM, Norman Scott Flickinger of Sterling, and Bradley Wayne Flickinger and wife Rhonda of Sterling; nine grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, October 26, 2019 at First United Methodist Church, Sterling with Pastor Amy Foster officiating. Burial will be at Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, October 25, 2019 at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Sterling or the Sterling Public Library in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
Interesting:    Mary died two days before celebrating her 89th birthday.   Her husband Bob died 9 days before celebrating his 89th birthday.

Carolyn Grace Cullop, 87, of Sterling, passed away October 9, 2019 at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. She was born May 17, 1932 in Winfield, KS, the daughter of Thomas R. and Nelle Branson Fulton. Carolyn graduated from Winfield High School with the class of 1950, and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, and her Master’s Degree in Education from Western State College in Gunnison, CO. Carolyn has resided in Sterling since 1961, having moved to Lyons in May of 2019. Carolyn was a teacher at Pratt, Winfield, Sterling Union 2, and Sterling Grade School for thirty five years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Sterling. She enjoyed stamping; traveling in their camper; grading papers; quilting; playing bridge; cooking for the holidays; and most of all, she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On May 28, 1956, Carolyn was united in marriage with Gerald Lloyd Cullop in Twenty Nine Palms, California. He preceded her in death on March 3, 2012. She is also preceded in death by her parents and great-grandson, Crosby Michael Schrader. Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Sally Peterson of Manhattan, KS; son, Jerry Cullop and wife Kelly of Sterling; five grandchildren, Kelsey Sellers and husband Mikie, Maret Schrader and husband Clayton, Janna Splitter and husband Matt, Jacey McDaniel and husband Sam, and Jared Cullop; six great-grandchildren, Trey Sellers, Charlotte and Cora Schrader, Laikyn and Landry Splitter, and Delaney McDaniel. STERLING – Harvey Donald Willhaus, 85, of Sterling, passed away September 21, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society of Lyons. He was born October 10, 1933 in Sterling, the son of Richard and Katie A. Zwick Willhaus. Harvey graduated from Nickerson High School with the class of 1952. He was a farmer, Golden Harvest seed dealer, and raised cattle and hogs. Harvey served in the United States Army from November 24, 1953 until November 9, 1955. He was a member of Midland Community United Church of Christ, Sterling, where he served as treasurer; member of the Moose Lodge #982, Hutchinson; Elks Lodge #0453, Hutchinson; and Lyons VFW. Harvey enjoyed square dancing, and had danced in every state except Vermont. Harvey always enjoyed his morning coffee with friends at Dairy Queen in Lyons. On March 10, 1957, Harvey was united in marriage with Marilyn Halley in St. John, Kansas. She survives of the home. They spent every winter in Rockport, Texas for the past 20 years. Harvey is survived by: his five children, Byron K. Willhaus of Sterling, Cedric R. Willhaus of Wichita, KS, Nolan C. Willhaus and wife Paula of Alden, KS, Teresa A. Maxwell and husband Mike of Sterling, and Verlan D. Willhaus and wife Stephane of Pretty Prairie, KS; four siblings, Kathryn Lorenson of Salina, KS, William R. Irena graduated from Minneola High School in Minneola, KS with the class of 1951, and later received her Teacher’s Certificate from Sterling College. She has resided in Sterling since 1955. Irena was a homemaker. She also worked as an Avon Representative; a cook for Sterling College; and for USD 376 as a bus driver and later as a cook. She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, and MIC Club both of Sterling. On July 30, 1954, Irena was united in marriage with Quentin Kilgore in Glenwood, IA. He preceded her death on July 28, 2015. She is also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Don and Archie McKissick; three sisters, Emma Lee McKissick, Mary Jane Wilkey, and Ruth Bunker. She is survived by her four daughters, Janet Fuller and husband Ken of Miltonvale, KS, Barbara Viramontez and husband Marty of Wichita, Connie McWhirter and husband Ken of Moran, KS, and Patricia Enoch and husband Mark of Topeka, KS; son, Bill Kilgore and wife Andrea of Sterling; sister-in-law, Ruth McKissick of Minneola, KS; fifteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. David married Lynn Phillips in 1962, and they had three children, eleven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was a businessman, an educator, coach, counselor, and pastor.

Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2019, at Grace Bible Church, 1221 E. 33, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.
