Joyce M Ensz, 85, died on February 15, 2018, at the Hutchinson Hospice House. She was born on December 20, 1932, in Topeka, KS to James and Mary (Koenig) Lloyd.

Joyce married Donald Wayne Strube in 1949. She later remarried to Eldo H ‘Bud’ Ensz on June 1, 1978. He precedes her in death.

Joyce held a membership with the Grace Bible Church of Hutchinson. She could also be found volunteering at the hospital, working as an auction clerk or fulfilling the lecturer spot with the local Weight Watchers group. Joyce was a member of the Red Hat ladies organization. She shared the love for KU basketball with her sister Janice.  Her other hobbies included shopping trips and attending social gatherings with her families.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her spouse Bud; sister, Janice Griffin and a grandson, Jason J. Boltz.

Survivors include her  four children, Linda (Bob) Boltz , Sterling, Becky Schechter and companion Dwight Gantz, Lyons; Gene (Diane) Strube, Oklahoma City, OK and Janice (Tony) Gray, Chandler, OK; a sister, Linda (Marvin) Kaiser, Great Bend; two brothers, Jim (Sally) Lloyd, Great Bend and Bill (Gerri) Lloyd, Scottsdale, AZ; 10 grandchildren, Shannon Caldwell, Edmond, OK, Lucas Boltz, Mitchell, KS, Kori Cloud, Sterling, KS, Shandi Webster, Hutchinson, Tanner Schechter, Lyons, Tyson Schechter, Strong City, KS, Dustin Strube, Choctaw, OK, Darrick Strube, Choctaw, OK, Gavin Gray, Chandler, OK and Heath Gray, Edmond, OK; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A book signing will be on Friday, February 23rd from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 24th at 1:00 p.m. at the Grace Bible Church in Hutchinson. Pastor Blake Gillan will be presiding.
Inurnment will follow at the Sterling City Cemetery, Sterling, KS.

She was born on January 3, 1923, near Campo, Colorado, the daughter of James R. and Levree (King) Fimple. Dolly graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1941. She was a housewife and worked alongside her husband for 69 years until his death. Dolly was a member of the United Methodist Church, Alden. On March 9, 1942, Dolly was united in marriage with Rodney “Beebe” Harrison in Sterling, KS. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2011. She is also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James and Rufus Fimple; grandson, Michael Langel; and son-in-law, Ronald Langel. She is survived by her three daughters, Carol Langel of Alden, KS, Pam and Bill Boekhaus of Richfield, KS, and Sue and Kim Goebel of Overland Park, KS; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Alpha J. Taylor, 80, of Hutchinson, passed away January 12, 2018 at Hospice House of Hutchinson. She was born July 4, 1937 in Urbana, Arkansas, the daughter of William “Hi” and Evelyn Mauk King. Alpha graduated from Nickerson High School. She has resided in Hutchinson since 1988, formerly of Sterling. Alpha was CNA, CMA, home health nurse for many years. Alpha loved spending time with her grandkids, garage sales, and reading. On December 24, 1959, Alpha was united in marriage with Donald Taylor in Nickerson, KS. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Raymond and Marlon King. She was born on July 1, 1944, in New London, Connecticut, the daughter of James and Margaret Kenyon Scanlon. She graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in New London, CT, with the class of 1962. Barbara has resided in Sterling since 1968, formerly of New London, CT. She was a secretary for the Sterling Grade School for 28 years, retiring in 2009. Barbara was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Lyons, and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in Sterling. On June 24, 1968, Barbara was united in marriage with Charles Boyd in Wichita, KS. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1993. She is also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Rebecca “Bec” Boyd; two sisters, Loretta Tardibuono, and Claire Scanlon. Donald Kent Caywood, 70, of Sterling, passed away on December 7, 2017, at his home. He was born July 4, 1947, in Sterling, the son of Kenneth and Wilma Engbrecht Caywood. He graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1965 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Sterling College in 1970. Donald was a lifelong Sterling resident. Donald worked for the Sterling Power Plant for 21 years and the Kansas State Fair for 6 years. He was a member of Grace Bible Church, Hutchinson. He served in the Kansas Air National Guard from 1966 to 1972. On August 22, 1969, Donald was united in marriage to Barbara Philips in Fort Morgan, Colorado. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his two sons, Scott and Brandi Caywood of Hutchinson, KS and Brad and Janell Caywood of Manhattan, KS; three brothers, Larry and Carol Caywood of Phoenix, AZ., Michael and Joy Caywood and Steve and Janet Caywood both of Sterling; sister, Judy and Rick Nelson of Rose Hill, KS.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Steven Gene Childs, 68, of Sterling, passed away December 6, 2017, at Hospice House of Hutchinson. He was born April 17, 1949, in Stafford, KS, the son of Donald and Marletta Welty Childs. He graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1967. Steven was a lifelong Sterling resident. He was an HVAC technician for USD 308 from 1997-2008. Steven was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Sterling and was commander of the Sterling American Legion for four years. He served in the United States Navy as a fireman from 1969 to 1971. On June 30, 1973, Steven was united in marriage with Wanda Harmon in Haviland, KS. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his daughter, Christi and Josh Gilmore of Sterling; son, Andrew Childs of Sterling; sister, Cynthia Fisher of Sterling; brother, Stan and Seline Childs of Bel Air, MD; six grandchildren, Lindsay Gilmore, Jadden Childs, Lucas Gilmore, Bryant Childs, Desmond Childs, and Christopher Childs; and several nieces and nephews. STERLING – Shirley M. McGlynn, 82, of Sterling, passed away November 16, 2017, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. She was born September 13, 1935, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Clarence Edwin ‘Edd’ and  Elizabeth Isabel ‘Mable’ Faler Gore.

Shirley was raised by her mother’s cousin, Mabel Faler and her husband, Ed Gore, after her birth parents’ early death.
Shirley graduated from Alden High School with the class of 1954. She was a lifelong Sterling resident. Shirley was a farm wife and owned and operated Shirley’s Hallmark in Sterling. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alden and Sterling; Women’s Sorosis; former member of the Sterling Presbyterian Manor Board; Sterling Chamber of Commerce; and Sterling Women’s Bowling League. On August 8, 1953, Shirley was united in marriage with James N. McGlynn in Chase, KS. He preceded her in death on September 7, 2013.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Colonel Clark Kershner; and sister, Dorothy Dee Evans. She is survived by two sons; Greg and Carrie McGlynn, Tracy and Jennifer McGlynn, both of Sterling; two daughters, Stacy McGlynn of Hutchinson, and Tammy McGlynn of Dallas, TX; brother, Donald and Dorothy Kershner of Columbus, OH; three grandchildren, Cooper, James, and Kate McGlynn; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Liberal, Dec. 28 (AP) — Clark LaVerne Kershner, 34, the widower father of three children who recently was called back to work after a long lay off by the Rock Island railroad, was killed in a switching train accident in the yards here today. He was born September 2, 1947, at Sioux City, Iowa the son of Donald Charles and Mary Jane Morgan Simpson. Tom has been a Sterling resident since 1977 where he has served as a Family Physician. He graduated from East High School in Wichita, the College of Emporia, Emporia and from KU Medical School. Tom was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Sterling; Kansas Academy of Family Practice, Member and former Chief of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Department, Sterling City Commission, Sterling College Board of Trustees, Board member and Director of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas, Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity of Rice County, Chairman of the board of Lil’ Cub Childcare; On August 23, 1969, Tom married Linda Lewick at Wichita. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his son, Mike Simpson of Sterling, daughters, Anne-Marie and Josh Friesema of Woodland Park, Colorado, Pamela Simpson of Sterling, Nancy and Brian Inwood of Sterling, brother, Jack and Wally Simpson of Wichita, sister, Jane Ellen and Bob Mark of St. Louis, Missouri, 13 Grandchildren. STERLING – Jerry L. Hammons, 75, died Oct. 20, 2017, in Carmel, Indiana.
He was born March 9, 1942, in Lyons, Kansas, the son of Gene and Gladys Brose Hammons. A longtime resident of the Indianapolis area, he was a retired accountant for the U.S. government and was a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Jerry attended the United Presbyterian Church, Sterling; was a Sterling High School, University of Kansas and Kansas St. graduate; and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Vietnam War.
On Sept. 25, 1999, he married Ellie McGuffey. Other survivors include two step-sons, Joe Fulton and Steven Fulton; sister, Jalene McFadden; two aunts; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Joanne Price.
Graveside services with military honors will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at the Sterling Cemetery.

Wolfe McNutt, Sr.  She graduated from Sterling High School.  Linda was a lifetime Sterling resident.  She worked 47 years at the Farmers Coop Union in Lyons.  She participated in the Sterling Bowling League and local softball teams.  Linda is survived by her two sisters, Teri Eskandari of Phoenix, AZ, and Carole Bengston of Hutchinson; longtime friend, Carolee Porter, seven nieces and six nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary Lu McNutt; Brothers, Ralph Jr., Jerry, Russell, Earl, Larry, and Tom McNutt. Graveside services will be 11:00 A.M., Monday, October 9, 2017, at Sterling Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Sterling Presbyterian Manor in care of Birzer Funeral Home of Sterling.

Gerald D. Massey, 86, of Sterling, went home to the Lord on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas.  He was a lifelong resident of the Sterling Community.  He was born December 23, 1930, on the family farm north of town.  The son of Irvin and Frenchie Massey.  Gerald was a dairy farmer, owned Massey’s Shoe Store, and the Sterling Bowling Alley.  He loved playing weekly card games with his longtime buddies. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Ken and Kevin Daily; and sister, Betty Jean Elbl.  Gerald is survived by his wife, Juanita Massey of the home; four children, Jill Broyles of Greely, CO, Craig Massey of Bristow, OK, Teresa Rife of Sterling, and Linda Nelson of Andover, KS; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.  Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, October 9, 2017, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling with Pastor Richard Fisher officiating.  Burial will be at the Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling.  Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M., Sunday, October 8, 2017, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.  Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church, Nickerson or Hospice of Rice and Reno County in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
