Peggy Ann McQuin

Peggy Ann Fulton McQuin passed away April 24, 2019. She was born October 6, 1937, in Broken Bow, Okla., to parents Walter Ernest (Peg) and Pearl Fulton. In her early years, her family lived in Oklahoma and Arkansas before moving to Sterling, Kans., in 1945 where her parents owned the Sterling Café.

Peggy had two brothers, Robert and Edgar Fulton, and two sisters, Helen Henry and Virginia Lewis. She always looked up to her big brothers and sisters, and she dearly loved and appreciated each of them.

Peggy grew up in Sterling, working at the café for her parents and had what she described as an “ideal childhood and school years.” She was a cheerleader and drum majorette and loved to reminisce about her high school years. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1955 and attended Emporia State College for one year.

She married Jim McQuin in 1959 in Council Grove, Kans. They had five children, Jimmy, Jami, Janet, Jennifer, and JoBeth. They lived in Kansas and Mississippi until moving to Perry, Okla., in 1979 where they lived until Jim‘s death in 1993.

Peggy held a variety of jobs over her lifetime and was always a hard worker, but her most important job was always being a mother.

She was a member of Faith Evangelical Church in Loveland, Colo., where she was active in ministry. She spent the remainder of her retired years splitting her time between her children and loving on her grandchildren.

At the time of her death, caused by complications from broken ribs, she lived in Holt, Mo., with her daughter.

Peggy enjoyed writing poetry, reading a good book, watching movies, and traveling, but her most favorite thing to do by far was to spend time with her family. She had the biggest heart, a smile and kind word for everyone, and a sense of humor that made her a fun person to be around. She loved God with all her heart and lived out her faith by blessing those around her with love and kindness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim McQuin, and daughter, Jami Jackson.

She is survived by her children, Jim McQuin, Dan Jackson, Janet and Hugh Ridgway, Jennifer and Steve Nichols, and JoBeth and Rodger Peterman; eight grandchildren, Hillary Anderson, Laura Jackson, Katelyn Peterman, Michael Peterman, Anthony Jackson, Garrett Nichols, Natalie Link, and Jake Nichols; nine great-grandchildren, Violet, Georgia, Holden, Gracelynn, Hunter, Caroline, Amelia, Kingston, and London; and her sister, Helen Henry.

Our Sincere Condolences

Peggy was such a sweet Godly woman. Anytime I saw her – she was smiling! She will be remembered forever and joined in heaven with all her Christian family & friends. May God comfort the family as they mourn their dear Peggy.
Conni Tricarico

As a kid we would visit her and her family every other year. My sweet Aunt Peggy. From the July 4th ‘s at the cabin on the reservoir to me living with her and her family in 1976 there is not a bad memory to be had.  Even the night I came home drunk and screamed out that I was a cowboy she treated me like royalty. Even though we haven’t seen much of each other lately I already miss her greatly. I know she’s in heaven with God and her big Jim and her daughter Jamie so I know she’s happy. I know I will see you again and I love you.

Sterling resident John Wilkey ’67 was awarded the Sterling College Distinguished Service Award on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, for his continual dedication to the College and his lifetime of service to the community. Presented at the Alumni Banquet and Award Ceremony, Wilkey was celebrated along with Alumni Award winner Gary White ’72 and Dr. Drew Miller ’02.

“John Wilkey’s life is marked by humility, faithfulness and generosity. Whether it is the local church, the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Sterling College, or simply people in need, John and his wife, Phyllis, have met the call and provided love, truth and helping hand. We are honored to announce Mr. Wilkey as our 2017 Distinguished Service Award winner,” said Dr. Scott Rich, president.

Wilkey, a local farmer and rancher, graduated from Sterling College in 1967 with an education degree with an emphasis in math. Following Wilkey’s graduation he and his wife, Phyllis, taught in the Salina area for seven years. They then returned to the family farm in Sterling where they continue to farm with their son, Tanner.

Wilkey is now owner and part-owner of Sunflower Cattle Company and the Clark County Feed Yard, respectively. He attends Sterling Reformed Presbyterian Church where he serves as a teacher and an elder. He is a current Sterling College Board of Trustees member, having served on the Board since 2009.
The Distinguished Service Award is the highest alumni honor presented. It honors and recognizes a lifetime of service that exemplifies the purposes for which Sterling College exists—exceptional contributions to society, distinguished professional accomplishment and outstanding leadership and character. The recipient or recipients are chosen by vote of the Alumni Council and Sterling College’s Board of Trustees.
