Mary Ella Flickinger, 88, of Sterling, passed away October 19, 2019 at Mennonite Manor, South Hutchinson. She was born October 21, 1930 in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of George and Carrie Justice Fulkerson. Mary was a near lifelong Sterling resident. She graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1948, and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Sterling College in 1989. Mary was a farm wife. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sterling. On July 24, 1949, Mary was united in marriage with Robert Leo Flickinger in Sterling. He preceded her in death on May 31, 2015. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, James Flickinger; and daughter, Catherine Flickinger Caldwell. Mary is survived by her three children, Janice Louise Duran and husband David of Elephant Butte, NM, Norman Scott Flickinger of Sterling, and Bradley Wayne Flickinger and wife Rhonda of Sterling; nine grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, October 26, 2019 at First United Methodist Church, Sterling with Pastor Amy Foster officiating. Burial will be at Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, October 25, 2019 at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Carolyn Grace Cullop, 87, of Sterling, passed away October 9, 2019 at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. She was born May 17, 1932 in Winfield, KS, the daughter of Thomas R. and Nelle Branson Fulton. Carolyn graduated from Winfield High School with the class of 1950, and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, and her Master’s Degree in Education from Western State College in Gunnison, CO. Carolyn has resided in Sterling since 1961, having moved to Lyons in May of 2019. Carolyn was a teacher at Pratt, Winfield, Sterling Union 2, and Sterling Grade School for thirty five years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Sterling. She enjoyed stamping; traveling in their camper; grading papers; quilting; playing bridge; cooking for the holidays; and most of all, she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On May 28, 1956, Carolyn was united in marriage with Gerald Lloyd Cullop in Twenty Nine Palms, California. He preceded her in death on March 3, 2012. She is also preceded in death by her parents and great-grandson, Crosby Michael Schrader. Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Sally Peterson of Manhattan, KS; son, Jerry Cullop and wife Kelly of Sterling; five grandchildren, Kelsey Sellers and husband Mikie, Maret Schrader and husband Clayton, Janna Splitter and husband Matt, Jacey McDaniel and husband Sam, and Jared Cullop; six great-grandchildren, Trey Sellers, Charlotte and Cora Schrader, Laikyn and Landry Splitter, and Delaney McDaniel. STERLING – Harvey Donald Willhaus, 85, of Sterling, passed away September 21, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society of Lyons. He was born October 10, 1933 in Sterling, the son of Richard and Katie A. Zwick Willhaus. Harvey graduated from Nickerson High School with the class of 1952. He was a farmer, Golden Harvest seed dealer, and raised cattle and hogs. Harvey served in the United States Army from November 24, 1953 until November 9, 1955. He was a member of Midland Community United Church of Christ, Sterling, where he served as treasurer; member of the Moose Lodge #982, Hutchinson; Elks Lodge #0453, Hutchinson; and Lyons VFW. Harvey enjoyed square dancing, and had danced in every state except Vermont. Harvey always enjoyed his morning coffee with friends at Dairy Queen in Lyons. On March 10, 1957, Harvey was united in marriage with Marilyn Halley in St. John, Kansas. She survives of the home. They spent every winter in Rockport, Texas for the past 20 years. Harvey is survived by: his five children, Byron K. Willhaus of Sterling, Cedric R. Willhaus of Wichita, KS, Nolan C. Willhaus and wife Paula of Alden, KS, Teresa A. Irena graduated from Minneola High School in Minneola, KS with the class of 1951, and later received her Teacher’s Certificate from Sterling College. She has resided in Sterling since 1955. Irena was a homemaker. She also worked as an Avon Representative; a cook for Sterling College; and for USD 376 as a bus driver and later as a cook. She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, and MIC Club both of Sterling. On July 30, 1954, Irena was united in marriage with Quentin Kilgore in Glenwood, IA. He preceded her death on July 28, 2015. She is also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Don and Archie McKissick; three sisters, Emma Lee McKissick, Mary Jane Wilkey, and Ruth Bunker. David married Lynn Phillips in 1962, and they had three children, eleven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was a businessman, an educator, coach, counselor, and pastor.

Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2019, at Grace Bible Church, 1221 E. 33, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

Gordon Ray Hedrick, 72, of Hutchinson, died June 28, 2019. He was born October 1, 1946, in Hutchinson, to Ralph Sterling and Virginia Rose (Hildebrand) Hedrick.

Gordon graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1964, Emporia State Teachers College in 1968, and received his master’s degree from Wichita State University in 1979. He served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1993, retiring as a Captain. Gordon also worked as a car salesman for Doug Reh Chevrolet in Pratt, retiring after 38 years of service. Gordon was involved in the Lions Club, St. John and Hutchinson, and was past-president of Friends of Quivira. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On September 5, 1967, Gordon married his high school sweetheart, Donita Newby at First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. They shared almost 52 years of marriage together.  Gordon is survived by: his wife, Donita of Hutchinson; daughters, Pam Wells (Jesse) of Enterprise, Kansas, Nancy French of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Emma Moss (Joe), Gage French, Kai French; brother, Stephen Hedrick of Pratt; aunt, Letha Hildebrand of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Jane Newby; nephew, Scott Newby; niece, Elizabeth Newby; and beloved Yorkie, Max.  He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother-in-law, Dee Newby; and nephew, David Newby.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2019, at Elliott Chapel, with The Very Reverend Andy Hook officiating. Burial will follow in Sterling Community Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

John Leo Miller, 78, passed away July 2, 2019 at his home. He was born September 30, 1940 in Sterling, Kansas, the son of Guy L. and Hazel Ramsey Miller. John was a longtime Sterling resident. He graduated from Sterling High School; and later Commercial Trade Institute in Automation Electronics. John worked as a Red Cross water safety instructor; and for DMH Corp. in Hutchinson, Kansas, as a foreman and in construction until his retirement. He served in the United States Army as a Radio Teletype Operator in Germany from September 10, 1959 until August 29, 1961. John loved golfing and was a longtime member of the USGA. He was a member of the Former Missionary Church of Sterling, Kansas. John is survived by his son, Jeff Miller and wife Angie of Springfield, OR; daughter, Debi Love of Lawson, MO; sister, Betty Lattimer of Hutchinson, KS; and three granddaughters, Ali, Morgan and Sadie Mae. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cynthia Gae Miller; brothers, Eugene and Frank Miller; sisters, Georgia Casey Dutton, Patricia Duncan, and Lillian Pickerell. Lawrence Ernest Prebble, 76, of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away late Friday evening June 7, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, Kansas.  The son of the Late Virginia Prebble, Father unknown.   Larry was born January 22, 1943 in Neodesha, Kansas.  he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane ( Alexander ) Prebble June 22, 2007 but life long partners of 29 years.  The couple lived in Hutchinson, Kansas at the time of marriage.  Larry enjoyed his family, friends, fishing, and playing cards.  Larry was a hard working man, he was a construction worker for a lot of years for APAC of Shears.  Larry was a truck driver for years and loved his jobs.  He loved his wife and children, also his friends very much.  He was loved by many!

He is survived by:  7 sons; Larry Jr., Andy and wife Dori Alan Prebble, All of Sterling, Kansas, Robert Putman of Nebraska, Curtis Prebble of Wichita, Kansas, Robert Prebble of Hutchinson, Kansas.  He had several grandchildren, great grand children and nieces and nephews.  Larry has 2 brothers; Gary and Vickie Crisp and Ralph Crisp, and a sister Theonia all from Pittsburg, Kansas.  Larry was preceded in death by mother Virginia and grandmother, and a son Thomas ( Tom) Prebble.

Larry will be laid to rest Thursday, June 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Kansas.  A celebration of life will be arranged at a later date.  Anyone wanting to come to grave side services is welcome.  Pastor Monty McFerrin will be officiating the burial.  Jack and Elaine will be singing.

Glenn Alvin Chambers, of Hutchinson, died on May 27, 2019 at the Hutchinson Hospice House. Glenn was born May 20, 1929 in Floydada, Texas, to Arthur and Audra Chambers. Glenn received his undergraduate degree from North Texas State University and his Masters’ of Divinity from Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology. Glenn served churches in Texas and in Glenwood Springs, Colorado Springs and Denver, Colorado. He served in many leadership roles in the Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church including chairman of the conference Board of Trustees, chairman of the conference Council on Finance and Administration and District Superintendent of the Pueblo district. He was known for his quick wit and eloquence in the pulpit. Glenn taught at Denver University’s Iliff School of Theology, was a 32nd degree Mason and was involved in a variety of volunteer organizations during his life. He is survived by his wife Melinda, daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Dieter Martin, son and daughter-in-law Christopher and Ashley Chambers, seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and his daughter, Cynthia Syncere. The funeral service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson on Tuesday, June 4 at 11am. Memorials may be given to the Sterling United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church or an organization of donors’ choice in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
