Willie F. Smith Fatally Injured in Ohio

Willie F. Smith, 78, was struck by an automobile in Youngstown, Ohio, Thursday evening, and fatally injured. Both of his legs were broken and he suffered internal injuries, but lived until Saturday evening.

Mrs. Will Hanlon, a neighbor, received a message Sunday morning, telling of the accident. Mr. Smith and his sister, Mrs. Redifer, went to Youngstown, a few weeks ago to spend the winter. Mrs Redifer arrived in Sterling last evening the the body of her brother. Mrs. Smith’s mother, Mrs. William Smith, died in June of last year.

Funeral services will be held from the Porter Funeral Home Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Spriggs.

Virgil L. Smith, a resident of Sterling since 1958, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, at Columbia Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, at the age of 64.

He was born April 8, 1933, in rural Ellinwood, the son of Ray L. and Marie Hoops Smith. He was a retired laborer.

A member of Raymond Baptist Church, he attended First Baptist Church, Sterling. He was a member of Good Sam Camping Club and had served in the Navy Reserve.

On July 4, 1954, he married Ruby A. Fenwick at Sterling.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Terry Smith, Hutchinson; three daughters, Rhonda French, Solomon; Linda Livingston, Hays, and Brenda Sydow, Wichita; a brother, Vernon L. Smith, Sterling; a sister, Mary Lou Volker, Inman; and nine grandchildren.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Sterling, with Jerry Fenwick officiating. Burial was in Sterling Community Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to American Lung Association, in care of Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling.
