Complete Obituary STERLING BULLETIN  6/9/1905

J. C. Turner

James Crawford Turner passed away Monday evening at 8 o-clock, June 5, 1905, at his home in Sterling, Kansas, after an illness of a little over a week.  On Saturday morning one week before, he ha a paralytic stroke that effected his whole left side, from which he never rallied. He was conscious for most of the time until a short time before his death. He suffered but little and passed out of this life into the next as one going to sleep. The funeral was held Wednesday morning, June 7th, at his home, conducted by Dr. Dobbyn of the Congregational Church.  The attendance was very large, and as a mark of the high esteem in which he was held, all the business houses were closed during the funeral hour. A number of friends from different points came to pay their last respects.

Mr. Turner was born in Georgetown, Ohio,  Aug. 22, 1843, and at his death was 61 years, 9 months and 13 days old.  He was soldier in the war for the Union, a member of the 59th Ohio Infantry; having enlisted when he was eighteen and served less than a year.  He was discharged on account of ill health. He moved to Windsor, Ill., in 1866 and engaged in the hardware trade.  He was married to Miss Eunice L. Wallace, May 10, 1868, at Windsor, Ill.  To this union were born eight children of whom the three youngest girls are living. He came to Sterling, Kan., in 1877 and went into the hardware business and here he lived until his death. He accumulated a competency and retired from active business about three years ago. He was a very quiet, unassuming man and to know him was to be his friend. He served as a member of the council a number of years and took an active interest in the welfare of the town. He has gone in and out among the Sterling people for twenty-eight years, and in point of residence was among its oldest citizens, and was known and honored by all.

OBITUARY STERLING KANSAS BULLETIN,  1917,  05/03

DENNIS TURNER

Another veteran of the Civil war entered the last roll call when Dennis Turner, the father of Mrs. Hoffman , of near this city, passed away Wednesday April 25, at two-o’clock at the  Soldiers’ Home at Leavenworth, where he had spent the winter. His death was caused by heart trouble due to his advanced years.

Mr. Turner was born February 6, 1832, in Clark county, Indiana, and was thus aged eighty-five years at the time of his death. His boyhood and young manhood were spent in Indiana and in 1882 he moved to Kansas and settled on a farm in Reno county six miles south of Sterling, where he made his home until his death of his wife in September, 1901. Since that time he made his home with his children. The last two winters he had spent at the Soldiers’ Home.

Mr. Turner enlisted in the service of his country May 12, 1864, in Co. H. of the 123rd Illinois Infantry, and served a hundred day enlistment. He joined the Methodist church in Illinois at the age of forty two years and was a member of that church until a few years ago when h transferred his membership to the Christian church at Nickerson.

He was married at Carlinsville, Ill., to Sarah Goss of Washington county, Indiana. Eight children were born to the union and six of the children survive Mr. Turner. They are Mrs. Isabel Wright, of Pawnee, Okla., Mrs. Mary Hoffman of near Sterling, Mrs. Ella Turner, of Wichita, Mrs. Ida Beitler, of Wichita, Mrs. Daisy Schardien of Meno, Okla., and Joseph Turner of Anthony. He also leaves twenty-nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Two sons, Thomas and Luther, passed away several years ago and his wife preceded him in death sixteen years ago.

Mrs. E. S. Hoffman went to Leavenworth immediately upon receiving work of her father’s death and brought the body to her home. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in this city Sunday afternoon at three o’clock and were conducted by Rev. E. F. Buck, the pastor. A number of relatives and friends were in attendance and paid a final tribute of respect to the memory of the veteran. The casket in which the body lay was draped in the flag which he had helped to defend. Rev. Buck preached an appropriate and comforting funeral sermon, speaking especially of the uncertainty of life and of the importance of living it well each day and being ready to answer the summons when it comes. During the service a quartette composed of Mrs. Lester McKelvey, Miss Helen Potter, Mrs. R.O. Shook and Miss Anne Farrar, sang several hymns very sweetly. Burial was made in Cottonwood cemetery and his comrades of Nickerson Grand Army Post served as pall bearers. The Nickerson Post also conducted their impressive burial ritual at the grave. In compliance with his request his body was laid to rest by the side of the grave of his wife.

Dennis Turner was born on February 6, 1832, in Clark, Indiana, the son of Martha and Joseph. He married Sarah Goss on January 5, 1857, in Macon, Illinois. They had eight children in 18 years. He died on April 25, 1917, in Leavenworth, Kansas, having lived a long life of 85 years, and was buried in Sterling, Kansas.
