STERLING KANSAS BULLETIN OBITUARY
DR. VAN PATTEN IS CALLED HOME
Aged and Much Loved Physician is at Rest After Years of Labor-Funeral Will be Held This Afternoon
________________
Dr. M. Van Patten passed away, Saturday morning, after an illness of but a few days, and this afternoon will be tenderly laid to rest, mourned by his family and friends.
Dr. Van Patten was born in Sterling, New York, and passed away in Sterling, Kansas, and the word sterling seems best to describe him – sterling in his faith, sterling in his convictions, sterling in his standards. The word sterling means, “pertaining to the highest standards,” : and it fits the life of Dr. Van Patten. It was fitting that his days should have ended here in Sterling, peacefully and quietly as he had lived. When we came to Sterling twenty years ago, Dr. Van Patten was practicing medicine and his office was across the street from ours. He was specializing in cancer treatment and people came from long distances to see him. He looked frail at that time but had lots of vitality. Later, he was obliged to give up his practice and was rarely seen down town, of late. He liked young people and their sports and seldom missed a football or basketball game, or failed to attend college plays and concerts. The college students all knew and loved him, and athletes had a staunch friend in Dr. Van Patten. He lived to the grand old age of ninety-six years, and this afternoon he will be laid to rest – loved and respected by all who knew him. The funeral services will be conducted by Dr. R. T. Campbell and Dr. A. C. Douglass.
Myndert Van Patten was the son of Christian and Mary Railya Van Patten. He was born in Sterling Station, New York, July 1, 1835. In this family were fourteen children, all of the others preceded him to their reward. In his early manhood he taught school near Peoria, Ill. Later he pursued his studies at Albany Medical College, N. Y., from which institution he graduated in 1864. Immediately he enlisted in the 110th New York Inf. On the march south he was taken ill and was in the army hospital at Baltimore for several months. Following his discharge he was married to Adelaide Foote. This union was blessed with the following children: Lutie, Mamie, Winifred, Fernette and George.
After practicing medicine for a brief period in Niles, Mich., and Chatsworth, Ill., he moved to Sterling, Kansas, in 1878, where he continued his practice for fifty years. A greater part of this time was given over to the study and treatment of the cancer. His wife, Adelaide Foot Van Patten and their daughter, Mamie Van Patten Peterson, preceded him in death.
On March 17, 1887, Dr. Van Patten married Lettie May Muse, of Greenfield, Ohio. Myndert, Guy and Lowell were the children of this marriage. In his youth he made his profession of faith in Christ as his Savior and became a member of the United Presbyterian church of Sterling, New York. Later his membership was transferred to the First Presbyterian church of Sterling, Kansas, in which church he served for a time on the Board of Elders. At the dissolution of this congregation his membership was transferred to the United Presbyterian church of this city. He took an active interest in civic affairs, and at one time served the city as mayor.
He is survived by his wife and six children; Mrs. Winifred McKinley, of Jetmore; Mrs. Verne Gilbert, of Plainview, Texas; Rev. Lowell Van Patten, of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Lutie Elliott, of San Bernardino, Cal., Guy Van Patten, of Southgate, Cal; and Myndert Van Patten of Buhl, Idaho. The first three are here for the funeral.
