STERLING – Gordon S. Kling, Sr., 94, died Oct. 30, 2011. He was born March 21, 1917, to Adolph Sigfrid and Anna Carlstedt Kling.

On June 30, 1944, he married Ethel Regina Basye. She died Feb. 22, 2002. Survivors include: sons, Gordon S., Jr., Dr. David W., Rev. Paul E. and Philip C.; a daughter, Miriam E. Pederson; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at United Presbyterian Church, Sterling. Visitation 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial in Sterling Community Cemetery. Memorials to Sterling College, the church or Sterling Presbyterian Manor in care of the funeral home.

Rex Amend, 76, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at Presbyterian Manor, Sterling.
Mr. Amend was born April 15, 1935, at Sterling to Bruce and Laura Proffitt Amend. He returned to Sterling in 2006 after living in Holyrood. He was a graduate of Hutchinson Junior College and Sterling College with a Bachelor’s degree in education. He was a retired school teacher and coach at Quivira Heights schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran with service during the Korean War, a member of the Sterling American Legion and a former Holyrood city council member.
He married Janet Arell Jan. 29, 1953, in Las Vegas, N.M. She survives.
Other survivors include a sister, Connie Green of Sterling; two brothers, Charles William Amend of El Dorado, and Larry Dean Amend of Sterling; a sister-in-law, Lola Amend of Lyons; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert, Don and Arden “Pete” Amend.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Sterling Library, Hospice Care of Kansas or a charity of the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.Family links:

He served in the Army and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked at American Salt Company. LeRoy was preceded in death by wife, Paula Capps, his parents, three brothers, Harold, Marvin, and Bob Capps, three sisters, Genevieve House, Brenda Hurst, Margaret Faye Capps and one grandchild. Survivors include daughter, Tina (Robert) Owens of Junction City, KS, three sons, David Capps of Tulsa, OK, LeRoy Capps Jr. and John T. Survivors include a son, Greg Parker and fiancé Jennifer Willey of Pittsburg, a daughter Stephanie Woods and husband Joseph of Joplin, MO, along with six grandchildren; Jessawynne Parker, Shelby Ann Woods, Alexis Kathryn Woods, Mitchell William Woods, Daniel Thomas Willey and Connor Peyton Willey.

Davis, 93, of Grapevine, TX, passed away peacefully May 10, 2011 at Lone Star Comprehensive Adult Care in Grapevine, TX.She was born September 25, 1917, in Reno County, KS, the daughter of Mark H. Elliott and Elsie Harvey Elliott. She graduated from Sterling High School, in Sterling, KS. She and her late husband, John, were longtime residents of Reno County. In 1998 she moved to north Texas to live closer to her daughter. She and her husband were retired farmers and owners of E.J.’s Uniform Company.She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Darlow Social Club.

On Jan. 1, 1938, she married John A. Davis in Augusta, KS.

Survivors include, a son, William Mark, San Pedro, CA, a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila M. and William Roepka, Jr., Southlake, TX, two grandchildren, Nathan Tiemeier, Aubrey, TX and Megan Cooper, Grapevine, TX and 3 great grandchildren. Other survivors include a sister, Shirley Hoppock, Wichita and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph R. (Joe) Walton, 92, died May 2, 2011, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. He was born April 22, 1919, in Kingsdown to Rev. John and Harriet Benton Walton. He was a Sterling resident since 1969, formerly of Deerfield. He worked as a repair engineer in the natural gas industry, a carpenter, and in the electrical plant at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. He was a member of the Sterling United Methodist Church, and Sterling Silver Threads.
He married Vera Wing on June 6, 1948, in Leoti, she survives. Other survivors include their three children, Dorothea (Dot) LeClerc and husband Steve of Hays; Norma Ooms and husband Wesley of El Paso, Ill.; Roger Walton and his wife Susan of Arlington, Texas. He had eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Laura Griffin of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Juanita Weidner of Mesa, Ariz.
Seven brothers and three sisters preceded Joe in death. Visitation will be 5 –7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Birzer Funeral Home in Sterling. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Sterling with Reverend Marvin Ewertt and Pastor Wesley Ooms officiating.
