Arden William Haltom, of Granbury, born Aug. 16, 1928 to Albert and Laura Patton Haltom in Lawrence, Kan., died Oct. 28, 2013 at Community Hospice in Burleson.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Granbury First Presbyterian Church.

Arden graduated from Harper Kansas High School, served in the U.S. Navy and completed tech school at Oklahoma A & M. He went to work for Halliburton Co. He married Deanna Crane on Nov. 13, 1960 in Great Bend, Kansas.

His 32 years with Halliburton Co. found them living in Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Manama, Bahrain.

Arden retired in 1986, moving to Granbury in 1989. He enjoyed traveling, both in the RV and internationally. He was a talented builder and woodworker. He volunteered his many talents with church camps, National Parks and Habitat for Humanity. He bragged of many “Great Adventures” with his grandkids in the RV.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Patsy Tubach.

Survivors: Wife, Deanna; children, Kelly and wife, Anna Marie, Kenneth and wife, Velinda, Heidi and husband, Dan Thorne; four grandchildren; two great-granddaughters.

He bragged of many “Great Adventures” with his grandkids in the RV. Arden liked to dance, camp with the Good Sams, play cards, water and snow ski. He took flying lessons in college and enjoyed his flying years. Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Patsy Tubach.

STERLING – Donna M. Jones, 80, died Sept. 25, 2014, at Rice County District Hospital, Lyons. She was born Oct. 12, 1933, in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Vinnie and Mildred Wright Goodwin.

 An Ellinwood, Alden and Sterling area resident since 1948, Donna worked as a Laboratory Technologist in Sterling, Lyons and Hutchinson. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1951, received her Chemistry degree from Sterling College in 1969 and received her Technologist Certification from St. Elizabeth Hospital of Hutchinson in 1970. She attended the Baptist Church and was a member of the NRA. On April 1, 1953, she married Gerald N. Jones in Sterling. Survivors include: her husband, Gerald, of the home; son, Clifford and Tammy Jones of Sterling; two daughters, Kerri and Carl Vagts of Sterling, Colleen and Bob Bisterfeldt of La Crosse; brother, V.G. “Jerry” and Teri Goodwin of Peoria, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Sadie Goodwin of Sterling; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Terry Goodwin; and son, Gerald Nelson Jones Jr.

Richard Allen Porter, 68, died Aug. 12, 2014, at St. Francis Via Christi, Wichita, Kan. He was born Dec. 1, 1945, in Leavenworth, Kan., to W. Earl and Mildred (Miller) Porter.

 He married Lois A. Frasure on July 12, 1969, in Hutchinson, Kan. She survives. Richard was an assistant manager at Easterday Lumber in Hutchinson for many years. He was also a carpenter and was a custodian at Nickerson High School until his retirement in 2012. Richard was a member of Amvets Post 11, Boy Scouts of America, and the Saint Teresa’s Mens Club. Survivors include: his wife; son, Paul Porter and wife MaLisa, all of Hutchinson; daughter, Jennifer Ekberg and husband Darrin “Ed” of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Samantha and Jacob Ekberg of San Antonio, Texas; brothers, David Porter and wife Carolyn of Chattanooga, Tenn., Larry Porter and wife Shirley of Magnolia, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

U.S. VeteranTed Schafer, 72, of Hutchinson passed away at home on Sept. 12, 2014. Ted was born in Sterling, Kan., to Don and Cleta Jeter Schafer on March 12, 1942. He graduated from Alden High School and attended Hutchinson Community College.

On Nov. 12, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Harmon in Alden, Kan. They had three children, Todd, Dean and Leigh.

Ted farmed for many years in the Alden and Sterling area, and then later became a supervisor at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. After retiring, he was a partner and manager of Salt City Payday Loan. Ted was a member of the American Legion and the ROMEOS. He served in the Army Reserves. Ted enjoyed working in his workshop and riding his Can-Am Spyder. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Todd (Suzanne) Schafer of Belton, Mo.; daughter, Leigh Riggs of Hutchinson; sister, Connie (David) Moore of Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren, Matt Schafer and fiancee Shawna Robl, Ellinwood, Spencer Riggs, Hutchinson, Kyle Riggs, Great Bend, and Brooke Boeken, Sterling; in-laws, Warren and Jan Wisby, Hutchinson, Keith and Teresa Harmon, and Bud and Marty Harmon of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Dean; brother-in-law, Rex Harmon; niece, DeLora Wisby Butts; and nephew, Steven Harmon.

Cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, all at Elliott Mortuary. Inurnment will follow in Sterling Cemetery.

Amy was a member of Kansas Open Barrel Race Association, Reno County Quarter Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, Kansas Quarter Horse Association, Stafford County Horse Project and judged 4-H shows and open shows. Amy held many awards such as: the Sho Nuf McCue (Turkey) AJQHA Champion 1979, AJQHA Youth Supreme 1980, 35 AJQHA All-Arounds-Top 10 1980, fifth in Reining and sixth in Western Riding, Kansas Horse of the Year 1979 and 1980, KJQHA All-Around 13 and Under Youth 1980, Reserve High Point Youth Quarter Horse Congress, Columbus Ohio, AJQHA Youth World held in Oklahoma, top 10 in Horsemanship, Western Riding and Barrel Racing.

Betty Carol married the love of her life, Leonard Ree Garey on April 25, 1942. They lived a full life together and celebrated 72 wedding anniversaries together. During their life together, Betty lived in or visited 49 of the United States and she lived in or visited 20 foreign countries. They had two children, Keith Dean and Marilyn Carol. Betty Carol was a member of the CrossPoint Church, Westbrook Campus and she belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star.

Betty Carol was preceded in death by: her parents, Tony and Mabel Colle; two brothers, Keith and Wayne Colle; son-in-law, Robert Dee Stange. Survivors include: husband, Leonard Ree Garey of the home; son, Keith Dean Garey and wife Sharon Lynn Stafford Garey of Sterling; daughter, Marilyn Carol Garey Volin and her husband James Milton Volin of Overland Park; two grandchildren, Curt Dean Garey of New York and Kimberly Lynn Trujillo and husband Ed Trujillo of Hutchinson; two brothers, Gene Colle of Hutchinson and Loren Colle of Sterling; two sisters, Venetta Arganbright of Nebraska and Joyce Munson of California. She is survived by: daughter, Cara Ann Klinkerman of Sterling; parents, Becky Wallace and husband Mike of Hutchinson, Roger Pinkston of Sterling; brother, Ryan Pinkston; grandfather, Darrel Tucker of Hutchinson; father-in-law, Ron Klinkerman II of Hutchinson; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Melissa was preceded in death by: her husband; mother-in-law, Terry Klinkerman; grandma, Rosalie Tucker; and great-grandparents, Marjorie Tucker, Jesse and Pauline Pinkston.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th Ave., with the Rev. Chad Trunkhill officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday through Monday at Elliott Mortuary.
