Shay, Reuben Jennings,Sr.

Shay,Sr., Reuben Jennings   husband of Margaret’Minnie'(McBride)

Burial Date: 1918,  07/28             Age: 70                  Lot: 227 Mausoleum

Note from Steven W. Shay – I was in Sterling last month during a trip to Kansas to visit relatives in McPherson. I stopped by Sterling Cemetery to see the graves of my great-grandparents and great-grandmother’s parents. During the visit, I saw the excellent directory that has been put together listing grave locations and dates of death and I read a flyer about the work that has been done on the directory and this is where I learned of your name and address.

My great grandparents were Reuben J. Shay and Margaret McBride. Reuben owned a grocery/hardware store downtown that now houses Ray’s Pool Hall/Recreation Center. The corner top stone still says “SHAY” and there is a bronze tablet on the front step which says “SHAY”. During my trip I visited the Sterling Bulletin office and using the dates of death listed in the cemetery directory, I was able to find their obituaries and learned that Margaret was instrumental in getting the public library built. Reuben was a charter member of the local A.F. & A.M. and served as a city councilman and on the board of health. I had not known all of this.
