Mrs. Hazel Hastings Schmitz

  STERLING —Hazel Hastings Schmitz, 84, died Wednesday February 16, 1977 at Sterling Presbyterian Manor.  Born June 28, 1892 at Creston, Iowa, daughter of John Nelson Hastings and Ella Wood Hastings.  She was married to Frank Schmitz April 20, 1911 at Sterling.  He died Nov. 6, 1943. She lived here since 1909. She was a member of Sterling United Methodist Church and the Modern Priscilla Club.
Hazel worked in the original J. S. Dillon Mercantile Store in Sterling, Kansas in the early 1900s.  She and her husband Frank farmed south of Sterling.
Survivors include daughters: Mrs. Barbara Buel, Sterling; Mrs. Blanche Moon, Monrovia, Calif.; brother: John Hastings, Lakewood, Colo; sister:  Mrs. Blanche Anderson, Columbus, Neb; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Porter and Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling; Rev. Bob Baer.  Casket will be closed.  Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery. Friends may call 6 p.m. Thursday until noon Friday at the funeral home.
