Mrs. Hanlon was born in Guernsey County, Ohio, and while she was a girl living with her parents on the farm she had the experience of helping her father hide his horses from “Morgan, the raider,” during War days. She remembers the days of what was known as the ‘underground railroad” when people in Ohio and other states that were friendly to the slaves, helped the slaves from one friendly neighborhood to another, in their efforts to escape from slaveholders.

With her husband, she came to Washington, Iowa, and later to Wichita, Kansas, and in 1878 they settled on a farm which Mrs. Hanlon still owns near Willington, in Sumner County. Here they experienced many hardships and experiences which people of today never had to contend with. The two sons, W.I. and B. M……..
