Sterling graduate leaves land to her alma mater STERLING — Sterling College has received a bequest from the estate of the late Ruth Culbertson, a Sterling graduate, entitling it to all of the real estate owned by Miss Culbertson. The property is valued at just over $1 million. Miss Culbertson, who died May 9, 1978, was graduated from Sterling College in 1930. She received a masters degree from the University of Kansas before starting her teaching career at Highland College, Highland, in 1937. Miss Culbertson, who taught math, science and worked with musical groups, became dean of Highland in 1944, a position she held until 1949, When she returned to Sterling to care for her parents.
Until her death, she taught many young girls and boys in Sterling, piano lessons. About 1956-57, she taught Jessie Hildy organ lessons. She also taught Jessie’s daughter, Karen Hildy, piano lessons. Karen went on to take organ lessons, becoming an accomplished organist, giving many concerts in the Salt Lake City, Utah area. Karen has been a church organist since the age of 12, for some 55 years now. She also played in the famous St. George LDS (Mormon) Temple for over 5 years; leaving a legacy in honor of Ruth.
