Charles Coleman, a black man,  was born in Australia.  He lived in Sterling for several years and was known as a skilled mason.

He married Mary, also a Negro, in 1907.  She worked as a laundress. Both Charles and Mary were hard workers and they were able to own their own home in Sterling.

They had a daughter, Pauline, born in Kansas in 1910.
