Obituary:

MRS. CALDERWOOD HAS PASSED AWAY

Well Known and Highly Respected Lady Dies After Long Illness

Funeral Tuesday Afternoon

_______________________________

Mrs. Mary Calderwood died at her home on Seventh Street, Saturday morning, at 9 o’Clock.  She had been in failing health for a number of years and for some time her condition had been critical.

Mary Isabel Orr was born near West Galway, New York, September 15, 1852. She was one of ten children born to Robert and Isabella Ainsley Orr. All but one of the children grew to maturity.

As a young woman, she taught school for some time in her community, and on September 5, 1888, she was united in marriage with William Calderwood. The couple lived for six years in Scott County, Iowa, near Davenport, where the three children were born, and then moved to Monmouth, Ill., where they resided for eight years.

They came to Sterling in 1903 and for years made their home east of Sterling. With the exception of one year spent in Lawrence, Mrs. Calderwood had made her home right here in Rice County. Mr. Calderwood died in 1908, but Mrs. Calderwood and her children remained on the farm and carried on the work. Later, when she could be spared from the farm work, she moved to Sterling and with her daughter, Miss Jean had been making her home on North Seventh Street.

Mrs. Calderwood was one of those quiet, unassuming ladies whom everyone loves and respects. She managed her home ably and was rewarded with seeing her children grow into fine manhood and womanhood. She leaves two sons, Robert and John; and one daughter, Miss Jean, to mourn her death, but to rejoice in the blessed privilege of a good Christian mother.

Funeral services were held in the United Presbyterian, of which the deceased had been a lifetime member, on Tuesday afternoon, November 25, conducted by her pastor, Dr. A.C. Douglass, assisted by Rev. H.N. Freeman. Interment was made in Sterling Community cemetery beside the body of her husband.
