After a courageous three year battle with dementia, Betty J. Taylor, 92 of Sterling, Kansas, passed from this life at the Sunshine Manor in Buhler, Kansas and entered heaven on September 10, 2024. She was born on April 27, 1932 in Sterling Kansas, the daughter of Rollin and Essie Mead. Betty was united in marriage with Billy Taylor on March 29, 1952. They moved to the farm east Sterling, Kansas in 1955. Betty graduated from Sterling High School in 1952 and then attended Hutchinson Community College. She spent her lifetime on the farm, helping Bill farm the land east of Sterling from 1955 until both retiring in 2005. She prepared many meals for the hired help. Her life away from the farm consisted of driving a school bus, teaching her kids to ride horses, attending their athletic events and having many card parties with the neighbors. They then moved to the west side Hutchinson, Kansas. She was a dedicated member of the Sterling United Methodist Church for 69 years in Sterling, Kansas. Betty loved camping and fishing with family while on vacation with her family. She loved traveling with Billy to South Padre, Texas and Arizona. Betty was a loving wife with Bill for 67 years, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her family she loved so dearly: son, Curtis and wife Myrna; daughters, Cheryl Thombley and husband Wilbur, and Teresa Robinson and husband Gary; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Billy Taylor, parents; Rollin and Essie Mead; brothers, Roy Mead, Harry Mead, Dick Mead. Betty will be remembered for her sweet smile, warm personality, outgoing friendliness and her non-judgmental attitude. Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, September 20, 2024, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will follow at the Sterling Community Cemetery. A visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home, with family present. Memorials may be given to Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community or Gentiva Hospice in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.

Monique M. Ratzlaff, 84, died June 3, 2024, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. She was born in Rousset, A’Con, Eure-Normandy, France, to Maurice and Olga Joffrette (Jaffeux) Dieu.

Monique graduated from a Catholic school in France in 1956. She owned Kitchen Creations in the mall for over 15 years. She later became a cafeteria assistant at Trinity Catholic School. Monique enjoyed bowling, ceramics, stain glass, jewelry, crocheting, and cooking. She collected Pez and Hummel figurines.

She married Elbert A. Hurd in 1956, after meeting in France where Elbert was stationed with the United States Air Force. He died February 9, 1991. On May 7, 1999, she married Larry D. Ratzlaff, in Hutchinson, KS. They shared over 25 years of marriage prior to her death.

Monique is survived by: husband, Larry D. Ratzlaff of Hutchinson; daughters, Patricia (Bradley) Unruh of Hutchinson, Pamela (Mike) Durkin of St. Petersburg, FL; son, Michael (Patricia) Hurd of Bartlesville, OK; grandchildren, Cheryl (Jeremy) Gonsalves of Hutchinson, Wesley (Kadrian) Hurd of Bartlesville, OK, Jordan Roth of Hutchinson, Hunter Baker of St. Petersburg FL, and Monique (Eric Heller) Jones of Bartlesville, OK; 8 great grandchildren; sisters, Yvette Siour, Andrée Stephan, and Mary-Therese Messager, all of France; stepsons, Anthony (Susie) Ratzlaff, and Joseph (Jess) Ratzlaff, both of Hutchinson; daughter in-law, Vickie Hurd of Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Maurice and Olga; husband, Elbert A. Hurd; and son, Gary Hurd.

Funeral service will be 11:30 Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Inspire Church. Burial will be 2:00 Saturday, June 8, 2024 in Sterling Community Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, at Elliott Mortuary. Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2024, at Elliott Mortuary.

Darlene Andsager died on Wednesday, August 4, of complications of dementia. Born in Long Beach, California, on March 26, 1933, she lived in Kansas for more than 75 years, mostly around Hutchinson.

Darlene was a realtor with Century 21 for about 20 years. She also drove a school bus for USD 313 (Buhler) and was a writer for the Inman Review/Buhler News. She was a cashier at WalMart for a short period in the 2000s.

Darlene married Forrest “Bill”/“Andy” Andsager on October 6, 1948. They lived in Dodge City for a few years, then moved to Hutchinson when he was appointed as manager of the Singer Sewing Machine store. Both loved horses, and they were longtime members of the Sand Hill Saddle Club. Darlene was a founding member of the Kansas Girls’ Barrel Racing Association.

Darlene is survived by her two children, Julie Andsager (Thanos Papanicolaou), Knoxville, Tenn., and Jon Andsager (Menchie Morales), Frisco, Texas. She is survived by her nephews Larry Van Horn (Sharon), Wichita; Stephen Andsager, Columbia, Mo.; Kevin Andsager; Darin Andsager; and Tim Kerwood; and nieces Judy Corcoran, Hutchinson; Pam Schell, Sterling, Colo.; Frances Seaworth, Fort Collins, Colo.; Karen Benedict (Carter), Burlington, Colo.; Jana Miller, Fort Worth, Texas; Kim Andsager, Hutchinson; Lisa Judd, Wichita; and Joyce Anderson, Wichita. Brothers-in-law Richard Andsager (Mary Ruth); Marvin Andsager, Hutchinson; and sister-in-law Phyllis Kerwood, Wichita. Beloved former daughter-in-law Dawn Seymour, and numerous great- and great-great nieces and nephews.

Preceding Darlene in death were her parents, John Ernest Hill and Anna Grace Hill, of rural Hutchinson; her husband, Forrest; and her parents-in-law, Willis and Rosa Andsager, of Plevna. Also, her sisters and their husbands: Geraldine Hill Elliott (Francis) of Atwood, Colo.; Josephine Hill Van Horn (Russell), Wichita; and Maxine Hill Miller (Edwin), Hutchinson. Also, nephew Michael Andsager, Neb., and nieces Linda Elliott McAdams and Janet Elliott Barker, both of Fort Collins, Colo.

Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery. A graveside service will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. Viewing for family members will be Sunday at 4 p.m. until 5 at Elliott Mortuary. Santa Maria – Sherrill Curry passed away peacefully in her home in Santa Maria, California on April 29,2024 at age 91.

Sherrill was born in Des Moines Iowa and spent her childhood in Iowa and upstate New York. She met Paul Curry while her Stepfather and Paul were stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. She and Paul were married in 1956 and together for 44 years. Many of those years were spent in exotic, and not-so-exotic, locales due to Paul’s military service.

Sherrill held a degree in Psychology from Cal State Northridge and a master’s in Marriage and Family Counseling from Cal State Los Angeles. She maintained a lifelong love of learning. She stayed interested, informed, and loved to thoughtfully discuss current events.

Sherrill and Paul relocated to Santa Maria in 1984 from the Los Angeles area and quickly settled into the community. They were active members of the First United Methodist Church where Sherrill loved singing in the choir. She was the house chair of the Minerva Club for many years and a proud member of AAUW, and the Friendship Club.

Sherrill loved the arts, attending performances at Cal Poly, the Clark Center, PCPA and the Santa Maria Philharmonic. She rarely missed a performance of the Central Coast Chordsmen or the Coastal Voices. Sherrill’s collection of books is a testament to her love of reading, which she passed on to her children. She remained spunky and adventurous her whole life. She loved the great outdoors and cherished the rustic beauty of Huntington Lake. She zip-lined to celebrate her 80th birthday and went sky diving for her 85th birthday.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Young, Barbara Curry, and Marilyn Curry. Her grandchildren, Patrick Young, Lela Heza and August Heza. And her great granddaughter Autumn Young. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Curry in 2001 and Grandson Garret Young in 2023.

A memorial is scheduled for May 31st at the Minerva Club at 10:30 AM. The Minerva Club is located at 127 W. Boone Street, Santa Maria.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Heifer International, Minerva Club, Santa Maria Humane Society or Friends of the Santa Maria Public Library.

Kaffie Lucille Alber, 76, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away August 9, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Morgan, Utah. She was born November 24, 1947, in Grand Island, Nebraska, the daughter of Merton and Lela (Stiles) Boroff. Kaffie has resided with her daughters in Morgan, UT for the past ten months, formerly of Sterling, KS and Coalville, UT. She attended school in Grand Island, NE. Kaffie was a homemaker. She enjoyed genealogy, crocheting, traveling and most of all taking care of her grandkids. On July 12, 1968, Kaffie was united in marriage with Thomas Howard “Tom” Alber in Lusk, Wyoming. He preceded her in death on July 25, 2023. She is also preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Leva Aufdenkamp, Kay Rieken, Carole Bejvoda, twin-sister, Karen Scott; and brother, Jack Boroff. Kaffie is survived by her four daughters, Debbra Sue Evans and husband Joe of Spanish Fork, UT, Stacy Ercanback of Coalville, UT, Angie Stuart and husband Guy of Morgan, UT, and Susan Richins and husband Gaylon of Morgan, UT; brother, Jim Boroff of Doniphan, NE; nine grandchildren, Amberly, Mycole, Jordan, Trevor, Tamara, Jennifer, Tanner, Baylee and Hayden; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Thomas Eugene Washmon, 87, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away June 26, 2024, at the Sterling Village. He was born March 19, 1937, in Hitchcock, Texas, the son of Joseph George and Susan Clara (Priece) Washmon. Thomas has resided in Sterling since 1974, formerly of Houston, Texas. He served in the United States Army for twenty years retiring on June 23, 1972. Thomas received several medals, including a purple heart. He also worked for the City of Sterling. Thomas was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Sterling and the Sterling American Legion Post #128. On February 23, 1962, Thomas was united in marriage with Linda Lee Conley in Belton, Texas. She preceded him in death on September 15, 2012. He is also preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Anthony E. Washmon, Don E. Washmon, and Thomas L. Washmon; two brothers, Charles Washmon and Don Washmon; and two sisters, Clara Jo Washmon and Ruby Marie Washmon. Thomas is survived by his son, Jeffery R. Washmon and wife Kathy of Sterling, KS; four grandchildren, Jill Washmon, Kaci Ludwick, Paige Washmon, and Michael Washmon; and two great-grandchildren, L.J. Gross and Linlee Ludwick. She was born November 16, 1940, in Round Grove, Missouri, the daughter of Ralph William and Zelma Lois (Vert) Gale. Marian attended grade school at Sterling. She graduated from Buhler High School, Buhler, Kansas, with the class of 1958. She continued her education at Hutchinson Community College and Emporia State Teachers College; and received her master’s degree in business management. Marian was an accountant for many years. She served in the United States Army as a console operator from November 29, 1963 until her honorable discharge on June 11, 1965. Marian was a member of the First Baptist Church, Sterling, a member of the American Association for University Women, and a fifteen-year member of the Sterling American Legion Post #128. She is survived by her two sons, David Gale Poe of Norman, OK, and Mark Daniel Poe, and daughter, Johnel Christine Almanza of Portland, OR; and seven grandchildren. Rodney James “Rod” Renollet, 86, of Inman, Kansas, passed away May 30, 2024, at The Arbors at Waldron Place, Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born October 22, 1937, in Sterling, Kansas, the son of Roy Ray and Anna Belle (Fenwick) Renollet. Rod has resided in Inman since 2019, formerly of Sterling. He graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1955. Rod was a chief operator in the Fractionation industry for over thirty-five years, retiring from Koch Industries in 2002. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Hutchinson and attended the Inman Mennonite Church. On November 15, 1959, Rod was united in marriage with Betty Louise White in Sterling. She preceded him in death on September 22, 2016. He is also preceded in death by his parents; son, Mike Renollet; three brothers, Hank Renollet, J.R. Renollet, and Lyle Renollet; sister, Joyce Renollet; and grandson, Clayton Renollet. Rod is survived by his son, Rich Renollet and wife Annmarie of Bel Aire, KS; two daughters, Kim Hendrickson and husband Bill of Buhler, KS, and Mary Norris and husband Jack of Inman, KS; daughter-in-law, Cindy Renollet of Arlington, KS; two brothers, Gene Renollet and wife Alice of Platte City, MO, and Bob Renollet and wife Joan of Lyons, KS; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was born June 7, 1956, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of John E. Sr. and Phyllis A. (Baldwin) Deist. Vanessa has resided in Sterling for the past twenty years, formerly of Hutchinson. She graduated from Sterling High School. Vanessa worked as a receptionist at AnswerLink of Kansas and Shears both of Hutchinson. She enjoyed gardening and most of all taking care of her great nieces and nephews. Vanessa is survived by her three sisters, Patricia Fenwick of Sterling, KS, Debra Cox and husband Randy of Talala, OK, and Kathy Deist of Sterling, KS; sister-in-law, Patty Deist of TX; and nephew, Tharin Deist of Norton, KS. Richard F Forwalder of Azle, Texas who grew up in Sterling Kansas passed away on January 28, 2024, he was 92 years of age. He is survived by his son David Forwalder of Azle, Texas, daughter Elisa Edwards of Lake Forest, California. Richard is also survived by Nathan, Jessica, Scott, and Samuel Forwalder of Hillsboro, Kansas, Angel Forwalder of Azle, Texas, and Nick Edwards of Aptos, California. Richard was married to his loving wife Doris who passed in 2020. Richard proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Korean conflict and earned degrees from Friends University and the University of Kansas. Richard enjoyed his career as a management consultant until retirement. Services will be held at the Sterling Community Cemetery April 13th at 1:00PM.
