LYONS — Francis Frederick Woleslagel, 88, Lyons, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at a Little River nursing home.

Mr. Woleslagel was a lawyer and served as the 20th Judicial District judge from 1959 to 1980 when he retired. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a first lieutenant.

He was born Nov. 15, 1913, in Montrose, Colo., the son of Jason and Edna Spencer Woleslagel.  He was the grandson of Francis Marion Spencer, first president of Sterling College.  He graduated from Sterling High School, Sterling, and earned a law degree at The University of Kansas. He had been a longtime Lyons resident.

Mr. Woleslagel was a member of the Presbyterian Church, American Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association and the National Conference of Trial Judges. He was a former editor of the Judges Journal magazine and the “Oyez Oyez” American Bar Association publication.

He married Jean Hutton Smith on May 14, 1942, at Chicago, Ill. She died Aug. 7, 1998.

Survivors include a son, Jon Woleslagel, Rome, N.Y.; a daughter, Jane Woleslagel, Lyons; and a sister, Vorine Charter, Sterling.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons. Burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p .m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home. The casket will be closed.

The family suggests memorials to the Lyons Public Library or the organization of the donor’s choice and sent in care of the Birzer Funeral Home.
