In addition to serving in the military, Melvin worked as an engine setter and a pipe puller. He had one sister, Velma Ann Tippin and one brother, Terry O. Tippin. He was survived by his former sister-in-law, Ann Mahoney, and his current sister-in-law, Veronica Tippin. He was also survived by many friends.
