Alvin Lee Schneider, 88, died Aug. 14, 2010, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born June 19, 1922, at the family farm in rural Rice County, the son of George H. and Bertha Schneider. He attended schools in Nickerson, graduating from high school in 1940. In Nov. of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy receiving basic training, followed by electrician training at Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was stationed at several locations in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged in Jan. of 1946, at Great Lakes Station in Chicago. He returned to work in Sterling for Walton Electric, then the City of Sterling working as a lineman then in the Power Plant eventually becoming Superintendent. In 1966, he became the Superintendent of the Power Plant in Neodesha until he retired. He worked at IMCO in Neodesha until they moved to Hutchinson in 1991.On Jan. 2, 1949, he married Glenys Irene McDill at the Midland Community Church in rural Rice County. They had three sons, Terry (Lisa) of Wichita and Roger (Debbie) of Wellington. Tom of Wichita preceded him in death in December 1997, at the age of 44. He is survived by sister, Laberta Hopping of McPherson; brother, Don Schneider of Duncan, Neb.; three grandchildren, Travis, Jared, Eric; three step-grandchildren, Stacy (Ryan), Stephanie (Rich) and Trey (Shanyn); several nieces and nephews; eight step great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Helen Schneider of Fairview, Okla. He was preceded in death by twin brothers and a brother Cloyd.Alvin enjoyed sports, playing men’s softball in Sterling until the age of 45, and watching his son’s school sports. He and his wife continued watching sports on TV, Hutch JUCO basketball and tournaments. He also enjoyed bowling, participating in leagues at Sterling, Neodesha and the Senior leagues in Hutchinson through the spring of 2010. Alvin was a member of the Lion’s Clubs of Sterling and the First United Methodist Church of Hutchinson.Graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today through Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society, in care of the mortuary.
