![]() HAYS — Lloyd W. “Nick” Nichols, 74, Hays, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at a Hays hospital.He was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Guthrie, Okla., to Lloyd William and Irene Elizabeth McHenry Douglass. He was raised by his stepfather and mother, Aubrey and Irene Nichols. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He established Ark Manufacturing in Sterling. He was co-owner of Ark Manufacturing and Coronado Binding Systems Inc. of Lenexa. He was a consultant for Hays Fire Equipment in Hays.He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and received the Purple Heart medal.He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Lions Club, a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and former assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 369, all in Sterling. He had served on the executive board of Kanza Boy Scout Council headquartered in Hutchinson.He married Doris Elise Woolery on Dec. 27, 1948, in Oklahoma City. She died April 27, 1982. He married Betty Dreiling Staples on Jan. 22, 1984, in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives.Other survivors include a son, John Nichols, Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Nancy Kimball, Stratford, Texas; and four stepsons, Russell Staples, in Alaska, John Staples, Phoenix, Richard Staples, Hays, and Wesley Staples, Topeka.Also surviving are two half-brothers, William Douglass, Guthrie, Okla., and Charles Douglass, in Canada; a half-sister, Ella Weckerle, Dewey, Ariz.; four grandchildren and nine stepgrandchildren.Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays.The American Legion will conduct graveside services at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sterling Cemetery in Sterling.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
