Fred Scoresby “Hop” Long

Fred Scoresby “Hop” Long, Kensington, Md. passed away on May 18, 2022. Born in Sterling, in 1942, Hop was the son of Gleeman and Jean (Scoresby) Long. He graduated from Emporia State University in 1964 and j o i n e d the Environmental Science Services Administration Corps, serving on the research vessel Oceanographer. For many years Hop worked as a computer systems analyst with the National Weather Service and other federal agencies. He also led a volunteer trail maintenance crew with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and was a longtime member of the Blacksmith’s Guild of the Potomac. He leaves behind his daughter Kathryn (Shannon) Long, grandson Jacob Rayburn, brothers Mike (Vickie) and Jef (Dorothy) Long, niece and nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Patricia Ann (Jacob) Long and daughter Karen Scoresby Long Rayburn. A small gathering to inter Hop’s and Pat’s ashes will be held at Sterling Community Cemetery on June 19, 2023, at 11 a.m. All  are welcome to attend.
