John M. Forwalder (Mike) passed away on January 23, 2025, at the Hospice House in Hutchinson, Kansas. Mike was born on April 6, 1946, the son of Harold and Luella (Boes) Forwalder. Mike was a lifetime resident of Sterling, Kansas graduating from Sterling High School in 1964 and also Sterling College. Mike was a good athlete, lettering in track and basketball. After college, Mike enlisted in the Army National Guard and some of Mike’s fondest memories were of his service in the National Guard where his artillery unit received the highest commendations and awards. Mike loved the out-of-doors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and conservationist. He worked for a short period at the Quivera National Wildlife Refuge and was also a reserve police officer for the Sterling police department. Mike, like his father before him, was an accomplished carpenter who built and remodeled many homes in and around Sterling. A memorial service is planned at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the Moxley Foundation, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
