Isaac L. McCracken

Isaac L. McCracken was born in Butler County, Ohio, July 18, 1936, and died at his home in Sterling August 26, 1908, aged 72 years. He was married to Mrs. Ella W. Stewart, Oct. 27, 1857. From this union were born eight children, seven of whom are living. Frank, the second born, died when two years old. The other children, except Mrs. Myrtle C. Elliott of College Corner, Ohio, and Dr. J. C. McCracken, who is a medical missionary in China, spent considerable time in the home in tender ministry to their father and the support of their mother, in her solicitude for her husband.

The marked characteristic of this home is that the parents were deeply religious without any ostentation and the quiet and prayerful influences of this religions life on the part of the parents has made a lasting impression on all the children.  Mr. McCracken’s father was a minister of the gospel, so he lived and moved and had his life in a Christian atmosphere from his birth. He was a ruling elder in the church and served efficiently in this capacity in two congregations before coming to Sterling. In the U.P. Church of Sterling he has been recognized as a man of calm and wise council in the administration of the church and one who could be depended upon as loyal at his post of duty without being driven about either by false teaching or unholy agitation. He was a member of the 93 Ohio Infantry in the Union Army. He was a brave soldier, one who ‘trusted in God and kept his powder dry.” Loyal to his God and country. After the close of the war he moved with his family from Ohio to Tennessee. He moved to Garnett, Kansas in 1884 and in 1886 he moved to Ness County and came to Sterling in 1891, where he lived till his death. The writer of this has lived by him for fifteen years and he never did me aught but good. He was at peace with God and man and endured a long and painful sickness with great courage and patience, sustained by the joy that was set before him. He was dressed and set in his chair some part of every day, even to the last day. Of his father’s family of nine children but one survives him, J. C. McCracken of Urbana, Ohio. Mrs. McCracken with the children mourn his death to which a large number of friends in this community and other communities extend sympathy. The funeral was held in the U.P. Church, August 27, conducted by its pastor Dr. C. M. Strong.

When Isaac Lawrence McCracken was born on July 18, 1836, in Oxford, Ohio, his father, Rev. Samuel Wilson, was 35 and his mother, Catherine, was 27. He married Eleanor “Ellen” Watson Stewart on October 16, 1857, in Morning Sun, Iowa. They had eight children in 20 years. He died on August 26, 1908, at the age of 72.
