Sterling – Fred Gerald Smith, 88, died Feb. 10, 2001, at Hutchinson Hospital. He was born Nov. 24, 1912, at Central City, Neb., the son of Fred Al and Josie Wells Smith. A Sterling resident for 51 years, he was a retired oil field worker.
He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lyons, and was a U.S. Army Signal Corps veteran of WWII receiving the Purple Heart. On Oct 3, 1946, he married Arlene T. Heldt at Phillipsburg. She died Jan. 30, 1999.
Survivors include: four sons, Michael and Robert, both of South Hutchinson, Rodney, Jonesboro, Ark., and Tim, Sterling: five daughters, Geraline Elliot, Hutchinson, Paula Capps, St. Joseph, MO, Linda Stover, Sterling, Connie Hess, Madison, and Cynthia Morales, Lyons; a sister Edna Sallee, St. Louis, 23 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis; five brothers; five sisters; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with the rev. J. Douglas Neumann presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday, both at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sterling Community Cemetery, with full military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
