Jason W. Newby

The body of James W. Newby, a former resident of this city, whose death occurred last Thursday at his home at Gate, Okla., was brought to this city Saturday evening and was taken to the home of his niece, Mrs. D. J. Hutchins, where funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. W. L. Hinshaw. A number of the former neighbors and friends of Mr. Newby were present and paid a final tribute of respect to the fine Christian life, that had just closed.  Burial was made in Cottonwood Cemetery and the body was borne to it last resting place by J. S. Flora, Dan Hanks, P.A. Evans, T. J. Hutchins, Ed Goudy and Ira Brothers.

Jason W. Newby, son of Joseph and Naomi Dicks Newby, was born near Spiceland,  Ind., Oct. 28, 1843….During the latter part of the Civil Was he was a bridge builder under General Sherman.

In 1868 he was married to Nancy E. Hall. To this union were born five sons; Irvin, Herbert, Elton, Cecil W and J. Carl. The first two preceding their father to the Better Land.

In 1878 Mr. Newby moved to Sterling and made this his home for twelve years, being active in the various duties in the church and community. He was a birth-right member of Friends, and early became a Christian. He was instrumental in building up the Friends church at Sterling.

On account of the failing health of his parents in 1890, the family moved back to Spiceland. Within a few months occurred the death of his companion.

In 1894 he was married to Anna Collins, who in 1915 departed to the better land. To this union were born two children, Rowland and Wistar De Voll.

In 1905 the family moved to Beaver county, Okla., and were instrumental in founding the church and school at Laurence, Friends Academy. Jason W Newby was a charter member of the Academy board at this place. Realizing that his days of activity were nearing an end and because of heart trouble he decided to leave the farm and the parents and two younger boys, went to Texas, staying there four years. After the death of the mother, the father and boys returned to Oklahoma, where they have since made their home.

He leaves five sons, two brothers, one sister and hosts of friends, who shall miss his council and advice.
