Gerald C. Newby
Gerald C.”Jarry” Newby a lifetime resident of Sterling died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at Hutchinson Hospital, at the age of 86.
He was born Aug. 29, 1912, in rural Sterling, the son of Clarence Garfield and Edna Pearl Soe Smisor Newby. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1931, was a former Sterling city clerk, and a retired Sterling city manager.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, where he was a former church board trustee, and to the American Legion, Sterling. He was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Kansas Municipalities League, and was a former member of the City Clerks Association. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 99th Infantry Division Headquarters.
On July 4, 1941, he married Jennie Jo White at Garden City.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Ben Clare Newby, McPherson, a daughter, Jerene A. Stadalman, St. John; two sisters, Josephine A Cole, Santa Barbara, CA and Ruby M. Hill, Hutchinson; a grandson, and nine nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by a brother, D. J. Newby.
Services were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Glen Holman and Al Spotts officiating. Burial, with full military honors, was in the Sterling Community Cemetery.
