Merrell Funeral Yesterday

Since the arrival of Wm. Merrill’s son from Kansas City, arrangements were completed for his father’s funeral service in this city in charge of the G.A.R., of which he was a member.  This was carried out as arranged for yesterday afternoon at the Methodist church where his name had also been prominent at one time.  It will be remembered the death occurred at Dos Palos, Calif., Tuesday, September 23d, at 11 o’clock as the result of an accident some three weeks previous. At 1 o’clock last Friday afternoon, the body was started from the Pacific coast and arrived at Sterling on Santa Fe train No. 8 Monday night by express.  It had been hoped Mrs. Merrell might also come at that time but she found herself unable to undertake the trip.

William Merrell was born in the state of Connecticut, November 29, 1829. It was also in that state he was married to Miss Louise Daniels, November 28, 1849, moving to New York two years later. In ’62 he became a member of Company D, No. 141, N.Y. State Volunteers, giving nearly three years of faithful service. For this he was breveted mayor by the governor on retirement. The greater part of Mr. Merrell’s life was given to farming both in the east and west.  While a resident of this city, he served two terms as mayor and moved in a short time to California, settling first at Santa Clara. Dos Palos was the last place of residence on account of the condition of his health caused greatly by old age. The three surviving children are Henry W. Merrell of Kansas City, Viola L., or Mrs. E. C. Eaton, of Santa Clara, Calif. and Rev. Frank W. Merrill of the M. E. church at Amboy, Ill. The
