John William McCaslin was born on June 30, 1831, in Pennsylvania, his father, Joseph, was 29 and his mother, Rosannah, was 29. He had four sons and two daughters with Mary Margarite Fox. He then married Lydia J Trent on August 2, 1888, in Indiana. He died on November 13, 1912, having lived a long life of 81 years, and was buried in Sterling, Kansas.

John McCaslin died Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. R, Daniels, at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 13 days.
For some time the aged gentleman has been in a feeble condition but his last illness was really only a few days’ duration.
The funeral services were held at the home this afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. E. Kirk. The deceased was an old soldier and the G.A.R. Post had charge of the services at the cemetery.
