S. W. MATHEWS
Samuel W. Mathews was born in Perry County, Pa., Nov. 9, 1840, and died at Sterling, Kansas, August 21, 1910, aged 69 years, 9 months and 12 days. On August 9, 1862, when nearly 22 years of age, he enlisted in the 126th Pa. Regiment of Volunteers, and served with credit in various capacities till he was honorably discharged Aug. 25, 1865, the Civil War having closed. He had been in the army service over three years. Two of his brothers, also, were in the service, James and Henry, the first being killed at Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 13, 1862. Mr. Mathew’s grandfather served in the Revolutionary war. In 1867. Mr. Mathews moved to Peoria, Ill., and resided there 9 years, and in and near Sterling, Kansas, since 1876. On April 6, 1869, he was united in marriage with Miss Eliza J. Houghtaling of Peoria, Ill., and to this union were born two sons, one of whom, Frank L., with his mother lives to mourn the separation from a beloved husband and father. He also leaves three grandchildren, two brothers, and two sisters, Mr. Mathews and his wife united with the Presbyterian church in 1877, where he held his membership till recent years when he transferred his letter to the U.P. church. He was stricken with paralysis Aug. 6, 1910, from which he suffered fifteen days. He born his last sickness with Christian fortitude. Throughout his life he was a daily reader of his Bible. He was widely known and much respected for his honesty and kindness of character. The funeral services were held at his late home on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. George Harkness of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Dr. F. M. Spencer, and the G.A.R.
