Clemard Vincent Mahoney Jr was a member of the Union Army, Co. E, 84th Regiment during the Civil War from Aug 9, 1862, to June 30, 1865, as a Private.  He and his brother, Morgan, joined the service at the same time.  The Army papers spelled his name Clemand and also Clermond.  He and his brother, Morgan, joined the Army on the same day.  Two of their sisters’ husbands were also in the Civil War: Mary’s husband, Nathan Howell and Nancy’s husband, Samuel Bechtelheimer.  The Army casualty sheet lists:  “Clemard Mahoney, Pvt, Company E, 84th Regiment of the Infty, received flesh wound to the left thigh on Aug 8, 1864, at Atlanta, GA.”  This information obtained from 2 Brigade, 1 Division, 4 Corps, from May 3 to Sept 6, 1864, on page 22, book 119 Dept Cumbld 64.

He married Caroline Miller and they settled in Yorktown, Delaware County, Indiana.  His occupation listed as a farmer.

In 1876, they moved to Sterling, Rice County, Kansas (at the time it was called Peace, KS) in a covered wagon.

He received a $6 per month Army pension by Feb 7, 1891, due to the war injury.  The pension increased to $20 by April 8, 1912, and he was getting $50 at the time of his death.

He passed away Oct 4, 1920, at the Soldier’s home in Leavenworth, KS.

Both Clemard and Caroline Mahoney are buried at the Sterling Cemetery (South of the chapel).

OBITUARY from STERLING KANSAS BULLETIN

10/07/1920

Clemard Mahoney, an old-time resident of Sterling, who had spent the past year or two at the Military Home at Leavenworth passed away Oct. 5. The body was brought back to this city for burial.

Clemard Mahoney was born in the state of Virginia, April 3, 1837, and passed away at the Military Home at Leavenworth Kansas, October 5th, 1920, aged 83 years, 6 months and 2 days. He moved with his parents to the State of Indiana when a small child, and there grew to manhood.  The deceased was married to Caroline Miller on May 28, 1857.  To this union two children were born. His wife preceded him in death three years ago. An only son passed away nine years ago. He leaves to mourn his death an only daughter, Mrs. John P. Pence, and a number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He was a member of the 84th Indiana Infantry, in which he served until the close of the war.

Mr. Mahoney was not affiliated with any church but always lived an honest and upright life.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Pence, at 2:30, in charge of Rev. W. L. Hinshaw, and burial was made in Cottonwood Cemetery.
