Samuel Lees was born in Mercer, Penna., July 15, 1831, and was married to Nancy J. Hoag at New Wilmington, Penna, June 19, 1861. To this union, there are five children living-James H., of Ft. Morgan, Col., Frank of Blue Lake, Calif., E.H. of Sterling, and Mrs. Minnie Mann, of Detroit, Mich. He enlisted in the Civil War and was, in the battles of Shepherdstown, Fredericksburg and five days battle of Chancellorsville. His father died when he was thirteen years old and he had his own way to make. He learned the blacksmith trade and worked at that and at farming for 30 years in Illinois, and by hard work and thrift amassed a competency for his latter days. He removed to Sterling in 1888 and resided here ever since. During his whole life, his leading principle was strict honesty. He was a good citizen, a true husband, and an indulgent father. The funeral was conducted by Dr. F. M. Spencer at the home Tuesday afternoon.
